28 Nov 2022 The latest Commitment of Traders report from the London Robusta coffee market has seen the Speculative Managed Money Sector increase their net short position by 3.15% within the market over the week of trade leading to Tuesday 22nd. November 2022: to register a new net short sold position of 29,439 Lots which is the equivalent of 4,906,500 bags. This net short position has most likely been extended further following the period of firmer trade that has since followed. The latest Commitment of Traders report from the New York arabica market will be released later today, due to the Thanksgiving holiday observed last week, on the 24th November 2022. The January 2023 to March 2023 contract arbitrage between the London and New York markets widened on Friday to register this at 80.82 usc/Lb. This equates to 48.97% price discount for the London Robusta coffee market. This wide arbitrage may be viewed by price sensitive roasters as an attractive alternative discount for Robusta against the comparatively higher value arabica coffee. The Certified washed Arabica coffee stocks held against the New York exchange were seen to seen to increase by 7,189 bags on Friday, to register these stocks at 557,938 bags, with 90.51% of these certified stocks being held in Europe at a total of 504,980 bags and the remaining 9.49% being held in the USA at a total 52,958. Barchart - Thu Jun 15, 2:12PM CDT July arabica coffee (KCN23) on Thursday closed up +2.60 (+1.41%), and July ICE robusta coffee (RMN23) closed up +79 (+2.90%). Coffee prices Thursday rose sharply, with robusta posting a record high (data from 2008). Strength in the Brazilian real (^USDBRL) is bullish for coffee prices as the real Thursday climbed to a 1-year high against the dollar. The stronger real discourages export selling from Brazi's coffee producers. Robusta has support from increased demand from roasters who are substituting arabica beans for cheaper robusta beans in a variety of retail coffee blends to control production costs and shield consumers from inflation. Tightness in robusta coffee supplies is bullish for prices. Vietnam's General Department of Vietnam Customs reported last Friday that Vietnam's May coffee exports fell -8.5% m/m to 149,667 MT.
