Gayaji Dam: India’s longest rubber dam on the Falgu River

Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, has opened the Gayaji Dam, the country’s longest rubber dam, on the Falgu River in Gaya. An approximate Rs 324 crore was spent on the development of the dam. The project featured experts from IIT (Roorkee). There will always be enough groundwater in the barrier for pilgrims’ comfort. Due to its development, devotees who come to the Falgu River at Vishnupad Ghat to perform Pind Daan will now have access to a minimum of 2 feet of water all year round. • On the suggestion of specialists from IIT Roorkee, the Rubina Company of Austria built the Gayaji Dam in partnership with Nagarjuna Building Company of Hyderabad. • In addition to the rubber dam, the Falgu River’s banks have been improved, and a steel crossing has been constructed so pilgrims can visit Sita Kund. • Rubber that is 17 mm thick makes up the rubber dam. Its width is 400 metres, and its elevation is 3 metres. The dam’s total water capacity will be roughly 2.5 km after completion. • Bar Dam has been maintained at a 3 m height. It can retain three metres of water. If more water is present, it will flow from the top of the rubber dam downward or toward the north. Plans have been developed to release water from the rubber dam under specific conditions. • It is resistant to bullets and, as stated by specialists, won’t decay for 100 years. This rubber dam, constructed for around 312 crores, would store water in the Falgu river all year. • This will make it easier for individual...

Dams in India: List of Reservoirs in India; Longest, Largest, Highest, Oldest & State

• Gravity Dams : It is constructed from concrete or stone masonry and designed to hold back water by using only the weight of the material and its resistance against the foundation to oppose the horizontal pressure of water pushing against it. Its ex: Anagpur Dam built in the era of King Anangpal 1 of Tomar dynasty, in Faridabad, Haryana. • Arch Dam : An arch dam is a concrete dam that is curved upstream in the plan. It is designed so that the hydrostatic pressure (force of the water against it) presses against the arch, causing the arch to straighten slightly and strengthening the structure as it pushes into its foundation or abutments. Ex: The arch dam in Idukki, built across the Kuravan and Kurathi hills, is the world's second and Asia's first arch dam. • Barrage Dams : A barrage is a type of low-head, diversion dam which consists of a number of large gates that can be opened or closed to control the amount of water passing through. This allows the structure to regulate and stabilise river water elevation upstream for use in irrigation and other systems. Ex: Farakka Barrageacross the Ganga river located in Murshidabad, West Bengal,18 km (11 mi) is the largest barrage of India. • Arch-Gravity Dam: With the Characteristics of both arch and gravity it is a dam that curves upstream in a narrowing curve that directs most of the water pressure against the canyon rock walls. Ex: Changuinola Dam is an example of the RCC arch-gravity dam. • Embankment Dams: An embankment dam is ...

India To Commence Trial Runs For The Country's Largest Hydropower Project Near China Border

A government of India enterprise, NHPC Ltd, will commence trial runs in July for the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP). The project is situated in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. NHPC Limited, formerly known as National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd, is the largest hydropower development organisation in India. After a delay of 20 years, India is finally approaching the launch of a hydropower project that is essential for the region's energy transition. The project has been in the works for a long time and is a significant step for India. SLHEP is the biggest hydroelectric project undertaken in India so far and is a 'run of river' scheme with a small pondage on river Subansiri. A run-of-river dam is one in which theflow of water in the river downstream of the dam is the same as the flow of water upstream of the dam. The project is located near North Lakhimpur on the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The nearest railhead is Nagaon and the nearest airport is Lilabari/Dibrugarh. The estimated annual energy generation from the project is 7421.59 MU in a 90 per cent dependable year. The installed capacity of the project is 2,000 Million Watts (MW). "Being a part of the cascade development conceived by the Brahmaputra Board, the project would also afford relief from floods by moderating the flood in the Subansiri river,” the NHPC Ltd stated in a release, adding that “the project will bring overall development in the area and give a fillip to the overall econom...
