Advance possession letter issued for 30

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government on Wednesday submitted before the Bombay high court that a letter has been issued by the suburban collectorate of ‘advance possession’ of 12 hectare—over 30 acres—land for a new high court complex in Bandra East. The nod was given for advance possession of the land to the HC on an ‘as is, where is‘ basis with several conditions, said the letter. After the state, through its advocate general Biren Saraf, said there was progress and things were moving, the HC said, however, to “monitor the progress’’ the matter was being posted on August 9. The HC bench of Acting Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Sandeep Marne took the letter written by the tehsildar (Revenue), Mumbai suburban, to the HC registrar, informing of the approval granted for advance possession of the Bandra plot, to put on record. The HC was hearing a petition filed by advocate Ahmad Abdi through advocate Eknath Dhokale who wanted the HC infrastructure to be shifted to a new larger location and planned in a comprehensive manner. Last month, the state, through its revenue department, authorised transfer of over 30 acres of land in Bandra East to the Bombay HC for a new high court complex, central government tribunal and lawyers chambers. The public interest litigation was filed by Abdi in 2012 for transfer of the HC to new building and new premises citing inadequacy of space at the present heritage court precinct to accommodate all courts. The HC passed several orders to the ...

Maharashtra political crisis: After SC order, Uddhav Thackeray says CM Shinde, deputy Fadnavis should resign

Following the Supreme Court verdict on Eknath Shinde-BJP combine government in Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray said the chief minister and the deputy chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis, should resign on moral grounds like he did in June 2022.  The apex court on Thursday ruled that it could have reinstated Uddhav Thackeray -led government had he refrained from resigning as the Maharashtra CM following Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena lawmakers’ rebellion in June 2022.  "Just like how I resigned on ethics, Eknath Shinde, and this illegal government should also resign on the issue of morality,” Thackeray said after the verdict. Addressing a press conference with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Thackeray said, "Those who have betrayed me were the ones subjecting me to tryst vote. How could I have allowed this". In response to Thackeray calling for Shinde's resignation,  Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said the Maharashtra government is constitutional and legal, there is no question of Shinde’s resignation. In a joint press conference with CM Shinde after the SC verdict, Fadnavis said: "Thackeray said he resigned on moral grounds. I want to ask where was your moral ground when you betrayed BJP and joined hands with Congress, NCP.” Earlier, Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said after the SC ruling, the Governor of Maharashtra should not allow this unconstitutional and illegal government to function or take any important decisions. The Governor of Maharashtra s...

Armed With Nashik's Onions, How KCR is Peeling the Layers of Maharashtra's Politics to Make Rivals Weep

In Maharashtra, irked by low prices for their produce, farmers were often forced to either burn their entire crop or give it away for free. Recently, several farmers in Nashik district burnt their onion produce after failing to recover their initial investment. While the development showed the desperation of the crop growers, it came as a golden opportunity for the Telangana-based Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to enter Maharashtra’s political landscape. The BRS has decided to give a good price for the onion produce in Maharashtra, with the Telangana government facilitating the state’s traders to procure onion from India’s largest market for the vegetable in Lasalgaon. Speaking to News18, BRS state coordinator Harshwardhan Jadhav said: “The Telangana government is pro-farmer. The perception being made in the Lasalgaon market that the government is purchasing the onions is not true. It is just facilitating traders to get Maharashtra’s onions. This is not the first time onions from Maharashtra have been imported but certainly, farmers are getting a higher price in the Telangana markets.” According to Jadhav, onions of Lasalgaon market are fetching approximately Rs 2,000-Rs 2,200 per quintal in Telangana. He said this rise in price was from Rs 300-Rs 800 per quintal because of the high-volume export to Telangana. However, a few traders of the Lasalgaon market committee were not convinced. They said the current price for onion is between Rs 900 and Rs 1,200 per quintal depending...
