Mahaveeryar Movie Review: Nivin Pauly, Asif Ali's experimental film misfires

By Janani K: Mahaveeryar, right from its inception, stood out as an experimental film. By marrying the time-travel concept with fantasy elements, director Abrid Shine's film is a perfect example of out-of-the-box thinking and writing. The film is also a social commentary on bias and perception, among others. But, has this experimental film worked? Mahaveeryar introduces us to a mighty king (played by Lal) who has persistent hiccups. He isn't able to rule the kingdom because his hiccups don't stop. He asks his minister (Asif Ali) to bring home the most beautiful girl in the kingdom, as he believes that she can cure him. Meanwhile, we see godman Apoonananthan (Nivin Pauly) in the present day, who gets accused of stealing a temple idol. He fights the court case and defends himself. How do these stories join forces? Will the characters achieve their purpose? If this isn't the most bizarre plot, we don't know what it is. The first half is a courtroom drama featuring exceptional performances from Nivin Pauly and Siddique, who plays a judge. We survive the first half because it acts as a dark comedy. The lines are subtle and thought-provoking as well. The second half concentrates on marrying the two genres and concentrates on the king's hiccup problem, which is now being dealt with in court. It looks like these are two different films and the point when the two worlds emerge is not organic. In fact, it puts you off. Shanvi Srivastava, who plays Devayani, gets a solid role. Howeve...

‘Mahaveeryar’ movie review: Nivin Pauly stars in an absurd and mystical courtroom comedy

In Abrid Shine’s last film with Nivin Pauly, Action Hero Biju, what you saw on the poster was not quite what you got. The title – including its font – induced an expectation of a Singham-type masala cop potboiler. It, however, turned out to be a realistic, almost documentary-style narration of events that unfold in a police station. The film did have a moustachioed macho police officer as its protagonist. But it wasn’t merely about him; it showed the people and the events around him, thus attempting a tightrope walk between a ‘commercial entertainer’ and ‘experimental cinema’. Their latest film, Mahaveeryar, based on a short story written by M Mukundan, surprises the audience as well. Going by the trailers and posters, we were expecting a fun-filled time-travel courtroom comedy. There is fun, there is time-travel and there is courtroom drama. Yet it turns out to be the film we didn’t expect at all. ‘Rooted’ is how most people who watched their first two films – Action Hero Biju and the heartwarming 1983 – describe the works. But this adjective does not quite fit Mahaveeryar. Early on, we get a few slice-of-life scenes involving a small town and its people, sprinkled with humour, reminding us of 1983. But it soon goes into a different zone – at times, to different dimensions altogether. (Read: Nivin Pauly’s interview about Mahaveeryar ) Mahaveeryar has a simple premise, reminding us of tales from Tinkle. A king, Rudra Mahaveera Ugrasena Maharaja (superbly played by Lal), wh...

Mahaveeryar Movie Review: Nivin Pauly and Asif Ali lend gravitas to a wild imaginative satire

Mahaveeryar is designed as a story of a free-spirited Saint Apoorvanandan ( Nivin Pauly ) living in the present times, and a deceptive warrior from the past Veerabadhran, both put on trial from different timelines for two crimes that they have been accused of in their times. This might seem like a rather conventional narrative structure as two distinct narrative threads often mimic a parallel momentum. However, Abrid Shine distills the whole courtroom drama setup of the two halves to make it a single entity devoid of the constraints of maintaining timeline logic anyway whatsoever. The puzzle of the stolen idol in the current timeline is juxtaposed with a very severe case of sexual exploitation in the older timeline, involving the king, his second in command, and a village girl. This might sound like a very interesting central premise on paper but the treatment loses its novelty somewhere along the second half when both the timelines merge and the characters start interacting in the confined space of the courtroom. The issue that the film faces largely falls back to the often confusing pitch and tonal variations that the screenplay goes through without explaining the motive of sudden changes in the rules of the story world. Abrid Shine who has based his highly imaginative screenplay on a short story by acclaimed writer M. Mukundan seems to be too much in awe of the central allegory of the tale that he parts ways, with the idiosyncrasies of his storytelling impulses. The qui...
