The Man From Toronto movie review (2022)

Baldheaded The Man From Toronto takes orders from a woman his phone refers to as the “Handler.” The film initially plays coy with her identity, but her distinctive voice immediately identifies the actor who plays her. The Handler (as she is credited) has men in other locations: Miami, Tokyo, Moscow, and so on. She’ll eventually call on them when she thinks her man in Toronto has gone rogue. These guys have massive egos and apparently live in the shadow of their Canadian co-worker. The Miami guy (Pierson Fode), first seen beating a man to death with a golf club, seems to have a pre-existing beef that keeps him turning up every so often like a bad penny. So much for the darkly comic hitman thriller plot element. The underachiever story comes from Teddy. He is such a screwup that his patient, loving wife, Lori ( Teddy’s latest pitch is to his boxing ring boss, Marty, who has kept him on despite the fact the marketing brochures Teddy made don’t mention the address of the gym. Lori thinks her man’s latest idea has merit, which makes me question her common sense. Teddy wants to promote “no-contact” boxing, a cardio workout where people throw punches but no one gets hit. Back in my amateur training days, we called it “shadow boxing,” but what do I know? I’m an old man and woefully out of touch with the ideas of today’s young whippersnappers. Marty is also old—he thinks it’s the dumbest idea he’s ever heard. Teddy is so incompetent he can’t even do a simple task like planning a sp...

The Man From Toronto Review

Director Patrick Hughes continues to expand his hitman-centered body of work, following up on his The Hitman’s Bodyguard films with Netflix’s The Man from Toronto. Woody Harrelson is the deadly hitman and Kevin Hart is a small-town dope who accidentally creates a scenario that gets him confused as the assassin. Forced to share space, the two go from enemies to somewhat allies in a farcical adventure that offers some laughs and a couple creative action sequences. It never reaches the heights of other films in this genre, like Midnight Run or The Rundown, but it’s a fun summer watch. Starting with a strong prologue, Teddy Jackson (Hart) talks into the camera, making videos for his non-existent fitness followers as he tries to sell his signature workout techniques like Teddy Burn, Teddy Bar, and Teddy Bands, all of which get him injured. Concurrently in Utah, a lone figure who goes by Toronto (Harrelson) dressed in black arrives at a cabin to perform an interrogation for hire. He lays out his knives and tells the terrified guy tied up on a chair the bleak tale of how he watched his grandfather get filleted by a bear and what he learned from it. His mark spills the beans before Harrelson even has to spill his blood and that nicely sets up the competency disparities between Teddy and the Man from Toronto. As Teddy is a mess professionally and personally, he at least wants to make his wife Lori’s (Jasmine Mathews) birthday a success so he rents a cabin in Virginia to give her a ...

'Man From Toronto' review: Hart, Harrelson in Netflix dud

The tedious buddy action flick “The Man From Toronto” introduces an all-time loser in Teddy Jackson (Kevin Hart). He’s a recognizable Hart character: a fast talker with big promises — he hawks self-help fitness wear through his tacky YouTube videos — who never delivers. He is both the film’s “hero” and its chump. A man so aimless the locals of Yorktown, Va., use his name as a verb: “Teddyed” (screwed up). In every sense of the word, “The Man from Toronto” is Teddyed. Director Patrick Hughes’ film should be avoided at all cost. It was originally slated to star Hart and Jason Statham, but Woody Harrelson stepped in when the latter exited due to creative differences. The pandemic caused further delays during the early days of 2020. Once completed, Sony sold the movie to Netflix, where it unceremoniously drops more than two years later. Time did little to smooth out the cheap cracks and painted-over fissures of Robbie Fox and Chris Bremner’s undercooked screenplay. Floundering comes naturally to Teddy. He loses his job printing sales material for a local boxing gym after forgetting to list an address and phone number on the fliers. His idea for a training program built around no-contact boxing also finds few takers. In a bid for romance he takes his beleaguered wife, Lori (Jasmine Mathews), on a vacation to a rented cabin in Onancock, Va., for a baby-making getaway in celebration of her birthday (it’s unclear which Teddy finds more important). But Teddy can’t even get this rig...
