Nine killed as ethnic clashes continue in India’s Manipur state

At least nine people have been shot dead in the remote north-eastern Indian state of Manipur in the latest incident in weeks of violence that has claimed more than 100 lives. Clashes between members of the Kuki ethnic group, who mostly live in the hills, and Meiteis, the dominant community in the lowlands, erupted on 3 May, sparked by resentment over economic benefits and quotas in government jobs and education reserved for hill people. Scores have died in the unrest, during which mobs raided police stations and stole weapons. More than 40,000 people have been displaced in the state, which borders Myanmar and is governed by the Bharatiya Janata party of the prime minister, Narendra Modi. In the latest violence, unidentified gunmen stormed the village of Kamenlok on the outskirts of the state capital, Imphal, late on Tuesday and shot indiscriminately at houses using “sophisticated weapons”, Manipur government information officer Heisnam Balakrishna told AFP. “Nine persons including a woman were killed during the firing,” he added. Ten others were injured in the attack and were taken to a hospital in Imphal for treatment. Another nine people were injured in a separate attack on Monday in the same village, according to police. Tensions in the state came to a head last month between the majority Meitei, who are mostly Hindus and live in and around Imphal, and the mainly Christian Kuki tribe in the surrounding hills. The Kuki community had protested over Meitei demands that the...

Shreekant Sambrani: Manipur: A Distant Outpost Full Of Promise

IMAGE: A house that caught fire in violence-hit Manipur. Photograph: ANI Photo As the plane comes in to land at Imphal, the capital of Manipur, the visitor is treated to a breath-taking sight. A saucer-shaped valley lies nestled between gently rising hills lush green with paddy, looking like an emerald encased in platinum. The crescent-shaped terraces of paddy lands on lower hill slopes elsewhere are evidence of both the fertility of the area and enterprise of its farmers, producing bountiful harvests. It feels like Shangri-la, except that unlike James Hilton's fictional Himalayan utopia, Manipur is very real and far from bathed in tranquility. Those were my initial thoughts when I first went to Manipur 45 years ago in 1978. On my several subsequent visits, I was invariably struck by the eerie coexistence of natural calm and man-made calamities in the North Eastern state. And now that coexistence has reached explosive levels, or so it would seem. My substantial exposure to the entire North East, especially Manipur, was due largely to my involvement in the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad faculty consulting team for the North Eastern Council. As the youngest member of the team then, I was unanimously nominated for extensive field touring, which was a Godsend for me. It gave me the rare privilege to visit even the remote corners of the region. This was followed subsequently by professional work for some private/co-operative clients. Ever since the present trouble sta...

By Zarir Hussain GUWAHATI, India (Reuters) -At least nine people have been killed in the latest clashes between members of rival ethnic groups in India's northeastern state of Manipur, police said on Wednesday, as security forces pressed on with a hunt for illegal weapons. Violence between members of the Kuki ethnic group, who mostly live in the hills, and Meiteis, the dominant community in the low lands, erupted on May 3, sparked by resentment over economic benefits and quotas in government jobs and education reserved for hill people. At least 80 people have been killed and more than 40,000 have been displaced in the state on the Myanmar border that is governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party. K Shivakanta Singh, a senior police official in the state capital of Imphal, told reporters that a gun battle between rival factions erupted on Tuesday and went on for hours. "We have reports of at least nine deaths and 10 injured so far," Singh said. "The situation remains volatile." Federal security force reinforcements have been sent to the state and they have been searching for illegal weapons. Civil society organisations from the Meitei and Kuki communities have refused to join a peace committee set up by the federal government in the brokering peace. On May 3, members of the hill tribes including Kuki launched a protest against the possible extension of their benefits to the dominant Meiteis. Meiteis account for half of Manipur's population and extending limited affirm...
