Bhopal: Tiger spotted in MANIT campus; alert issued

A Tiger has been spotted on the MANIT campus. The tiger at large is said to have already attacked a cow and its future plans are unknown. The Forest Department has begun a search operation for the animal. Until then students, professors, and locals in the area have been asked to stay safe and be on high alert. Another circular also issued by the administration read, ‘This is to inform all the students that a tiger was spotted near the sports complex area. The forest authorities have been informed and an investigation is being carried out. All the students are thus informed to be inside their hostels and all the classes are suspended until any further notice.’ Meanwhile, forest officials suspect that the missing paws of the tiger point to occult practice that threatens tiger conservation in the region. It is alleged that 'tantriks' or sorcerers extract paws, claws, and whiskers to cast a spell on them and make 'money rain from the sky', according to a report in the Times of India.

Bhopal: Elusive tiger on the hunt, Bhopal MANIT puts off national technology fest

BHOPAL: With a Around 10,000 students from all over the country would participate in the fest at the Bhopal NIT every year. That is, until Covid struck. The 2022 edition was the first major tech event at MANIT after Covid restrictions were lifted. "Can you imagine! A tech fest being rescheduled because of a tiger?" exclaimed a student, adding: "But we understand this is the only way out. We cannot take chances with a tiger loose on the campus." For thousands of students, staff and their families on this lush-green 650-acre campus, the tiger-spurred lockdown of sorts seems surreal. The tiger that was seen on Monday night, and never since, not been clicked in a dozen camera traps either, has kept the institute and a 50-strong forest team on the tenterhooks. It has dodged a bait-cage, no matter where the foresters place it, and has killed two cows and injured two more. Classes were held online on Thursday and Friday, but the authorities hope to resume offline classes from Saturday as the forest department has said there is little risk until sundown. The tech fest is off the table, though. The MANIT administration said fresh dates will be announced once the tiger moves out of the campus. “Our tech fest is one of the largest in Central India. Around 10,000 students from MANIT, different parts of the country and other colleges of Bhopal participate,” said MANIT’s PRO Amit Ojha. The big concern was the movement of participants on the campus at night, Ojha pointed out. “As the fes...
