The incident that helped Rishi Valmiki to write Ramayan

The world celebrates Dussehra as a mark of victory of Shri Ram over Ravan. The great epic of Ramayan is the story of how a virtuous human, with his conduct, behaviour, choices and courage becomes an inspiration for millions around the world. Ramayan is recited, heard, learnt and practised in innumerable forms not only in India, but also in the whole of the world with great devotion and fervour. However, the bliss of being engrossed in the chant of Shri Ram is due to the great contribution of Adi Kavi Rishi Valmiki, who was the world’s first poet and who wrote the first Makahakavy Ramayan for us to understand the greatness of Shri Ram. Previously, Valmiki was called as Ratanakar, who was a hunter. With the divine intervention of Rishi Narad, he seeked true knowledge. Rishi Narad asked him to chant the words MA RA and asked him to observe penance. Ratanakar went on to chant the two words for years together and the two words came to be transformed as RA MA. One day, a group of rishis passing through heard the chanting coming from the anthill and dug it. They saw Ratnakar in the anthill shining with radiance. As he came out of an anthill (valmikam in Sanksrit), he was renamed Valmiki. After the transformation of Ratnakar into Rishi Valmiki, Brahma Ji appears in front of him and reveals the real purpose of his birth. He mentions to Rishi Valmiki that the virtues of Shri Ram, his conduct and abiding to principles of truth need to be known for the mankind to follow the path of Dh...

I have seen majority of people having Ramcharitmanas and even temples keep many copies of Ramcharitmanas rather than Valmiki Ramayana for Akhand Ramayan Paath. Why has Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas, which is a retelling of Ramayana, gained more popularity than Valmiki Ramayana? Tulsidas was criticized by the Sanskrit scholars of the 15th century ; is there any story why Tulsidas chose to write the Ramayan in Awadhi language. What were the events that led to the acceptance of his version more than Valmiki's? Summary: Tulsidasji chose to write the story in Awadhi on being ordered to do so by Lord Shiva who appeared before him. The incident is a very interesting one read the detailed part to find out. Further the popularity of the Manas is only restricted to the Hindi belt of Northern India and the part the of the answer describing the factors responsible, is obviously based on my opinion. Detailed 1. Reason for Tulsidasji writing the Sri Ramcharitmanas in Awadhi On the command of Hanumanji, Tulsidasji went to Kashi and stayed at a Brahmin’s house. There, at Prahladghat, he began writing the Ramayana in Sanskrit. Thereafter the story goes as follows: In the daytime how much ever he would write, would get erased at night. This incident happened everyday and he didn’t understand what to do. Then finally on the 8th day Lord Shiva came in his dream telling him to write the story in his own language. Tulsidasji at once got up with the words of the dream echoing in his heart. At that ...

How could Valmiki write the Ramayana?

As we know, there is no mention of Sage Valmiki in the Ramayana. He was mentioned or seen only in the Lava-Kusha story. So who told the complete story of the Ramayana to Sage Valmiki? Was it Goddess Sita herself when she left Ayodhya and stayed in Valmiki's hermitage? Please explain the incident in brief. @AwalGarg There are many sages who are Trikala Jnyanis, i.e. who can see the complete past, present, and future of the entire universe. But Valmiki is not one of them. He was only able to see the past, present, and future story of Rama, not everyone. And as far as I know it may have just been a temporary ability. @jabahar Thanks for your confidence in me! Valmiki actually started composing the Ramayana after most of the events described had already occurred. Only the events of the Uttara Kanda of the Ramayana hadn't occurred at the time he started composing the epic, which would have been at some point between Rama's coronation and (some stage of) Sita's pregnancy. @KeshavSrinivasan Ok, but did you saw the Ramayana on NDTV Imagine? I am pretty sure there was a line in which one of the locals of Ayodhya dictated - " Isme pramaan ki kya avashyakta hai? Maharishi Valmiki jaise trikaal darshi ne jo keh diya hai, vahi pramaan hai!" ... do you remember something about it? It is true that Sita and her sons Lava and Kusha all stayed at the sage Valmiki's ashram (hermitage). But that is not how Valmiki came to know of the story of the Ramayana. He learnt the story earlier than tha...

The Ramayana: Summary by Stephen Knapp

Early Life of Rama Dasharatha was the king of Kosala, an ancient kingdom that was located in present day Uttar Pradesh. Ayodhya was its capital. Dasharatha was loved by one and all. His subjects were happy and his kingdom was prosperous. Even though Dasharatha had everything that he desired, he was very sad at heart; he had no children. During the same time, there lived a powerful Rakshasa king in the island of Ceylon, located just south of India. He was called Ravana. His tyranny knew no bounds, his subjects disturbed the prayers of holy men. The childless Dasharatha was advised by his family priest Vashishtha to perform a fire sacrifice ceremony to seek the blessings of God for children. Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, decided to manifest himself as the eldest son of Dasharatha in order to kill Ravana. While performing the fire worship ceremony, a majestic figure rose from the sacrificial fire and handed to Dasharatha a bowl of rice pudding, saying, "God is pleased with you and has asked you to distribute this rice pudding (payasa) to your wives - they will soon bear your children." The king received the gift joyfully and distributed the payasa to his three queens, Kausalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra. Kausalya, the eldest queen, gave birth to the eldest son Rama. Bharata, the second son was born to Kaikeyi and Sumitra gave birth to the twins Lakshmana and Shatrughna. Rama's birthday is celebrated now as Ramanavami. Viswamitra blessed Dasharatha and asked him to send Ra...
