The accountants have recorded this portion as a “free transfer” for Barcelona after Alonso exited his Chelsea contract Marcos Alonso has left Chelsea by mutual consent, ending a six-year association with the club. Everyone would like to thank Marcos for his service to the Blues and wish him all the very best for the rest of his career. — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) While no player is perfect, and Alonso certainly was not, he was a key part of our last Premier League title and showed again under Tuchel that as a left wing-back, few could do what he could. That he saved some of his best games for Spurs also didn’t hurt. Both Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell have big shoes to fill, especially when it comes to consistent attacking contributions and technically perfect volleys from the left wing-back position. Good luck, Marcos! And thanks for the great memories!

How Barcelona used Marcos Alonso to frustrate Real Madrid

Alonso is a curious footballer. He’s not even really a left-back because he lacks natural defensive qualities and gets dragged out of position far too easily when playing in a four-man defence. He evolved into a truly impressive footballer in a Fiorentina side often playing 3-5-2 and was signed by Antonio Conte’s Alonso isn’t the first footballer to look more comfortable at wing-back than at full-back. But maybe he’s the first footballer who clearly belongs at wing-back yet would count aerial prowess as his main quality. Wing-backs are not generally involved in aerial battles — certainly not crucial ones. And yet Alonso has made a name for himself as a specialist far-post blunderer, a wing-back-cum-target-man, rather than an expert crosser or a reliable hard worker. It’s difficult to think of any comparable footballer. So how would Alonso fare in the Clasico, up against the reigning Ballon d’Or, In the opening period, Barcelona tried to play their usual type of football. They held a high defensive line, wanted to hold onto the ball for long periods and tried to impose themselves on the game. In this period, Alonso struggled. In a positional sense, he was very uncertain and his body shape was often wrong. Within the first 30 seconds, Benzema made a run across the front of Alonso, who tracked him into a deeper position, despite the fact he would have been able to see Alonso didn...
