Meghalaya assembly elections:Exit polls show that the National People’s Party (NPP) is all set to win the most seats in Meghalaya. The predictions show that 18-24 of the seats out of the total 60 seats will be won by the NPP. The BJP, which is likely to win in the other two states, Tripura and Nagaland, will win only 4-8 seats in Meghalaya. The Congress is likely to win 6-12 seats, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) 5-9 seats, while others are expected to take over on 17-29 seats. The tenure of the 10th Meghalaya Assembly is scheduled to end on 15 March 2023. The previous assembly elections were held in February 2018. After the election, a coalition led by the National People's Party formed the state government, with Conrad Sangma becoming Chief Minister. Meghalaya Assembly Elections 2023: Exit Poll Results Several exit polls have predicted that the NPP is likely to secure 29 per cent of the vote share in Meghalaya, followed by Congress and the Trinamool Congress with 19 per cent and 16 per cent respectively. The BJP is predicted to bag only 14 per cent of the vote share. The state recorded nearly 64 per cent turnout till 3 pm, as polling remained largely peaceful since morning, officials said on Monday. "Voting has been peaceful with long queues at several polling stations," an election official said. He also said "no untoward incident" was reported. Meghalaya Assembly Election Result 2023 Updates: After several rounds of counting, Conrad Sangma's National People's Party emerged as the winner of the Meghalaya polls by winning in 26 of the 60 constituencies. The Congress bagged five seats while the BJP, which was earlier in an alliance with the NPP but decided to fight the polls alone and contested in all the 60 constituencies, got two seats in its kitty. The remaining seats got divided between independents and other parties. As Conrad Sagma's NPP fell short of six votes to form the majority, BJP's national president J P Nadda advised the state unit of the saffron party to support the NPP to form the government in Meghalaya. Elections in Meghalaya were held in a single phase on February 27, with the state recording an average voter turnout of 85.25 per cent. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated the people of Meghalaya after the election results were announced on Thursday and said that her party received 15% votes and is the principal opposition in the state. "I congratulate the people of Meghalaya. We just started six months ago and have got 15% vote. It will help our party get a national status. Now, we are the principal opposition. Meghalaya Election 2023: More than 75 per cent of the 21.6 lakh electors in Meghalaya cast their votes on Monday till 5 pm and the polling was peaceful, Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor said. The figure is expected to increase as the polling continued for several hours after the scheduled time of conclusion. The ruling National People's Party (NPP) is contesting to retain power while the BJP, Trinamool Congress and other regional parties are attempting to bring about a change in the government in the northeastern state. The Congress and the BJP are contesting in 59 seats, while the NPP has put up nominees in 56 constituencies, the TMC in 57 and the UDP in 46. Polling began in 59 of 60 assembly seats in Meghalaya at 7 am today. As many as 21.6 lakh voters will take part in today's democratic exercise. According to the Election Commission, polling is underway at 3,419 polling stations. 640 polling stations have been categorised as vulnerable and 323 as critical. Polling will end at 4 pm. A total of 369 candidates are in the fray of which 36 are women. The ruling National People's Party is looking to retain power in the state while the BJP, Trinamool Congress and other regional parties vying to bring about a change in the government. The Meghalaya Assembly elections will be held on February 27 and every major party including BJP, Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the ruling National People's Party (NPP) are confident of victory as all of them claim to have the people's support. As many as 375 candidates are contesting the elections for The state is currently being ruled by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma who climbed to power after the NPP bagged 19 seats. While the Congress was the single largest party with 21 seats, the NPP allied with other regional parties which had 17 seats distributed among them.
