: Punjab’s southwest district of Fazilka has topped in the state in implementing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) with the total expenditure of ₹ 145.48 crore exceeding the set target by 168% during the financial year 2021-22, improving the infrastructure in the villages, thereby enhancing the living standards of the people. Fazilka tops in implementing MGNREGA in Punjab (HT) “A total of 30,47,342 man days were generated during the previous year in the district to boost rural infrastructure and employment opportunities for the rural masses,” said Himanshu Aggarwal, deputy commissioner-cum-district program officer, MGNREGA, Fazilka. The district was given a set target of minimum expenditure of ₹ 86.25 crore. “The district has not merely achieved 168% of the set target but also improved the infrastructure in the villages of the district through the MGNREGA scheme which also improved the living standards of the people,” Aggarwal said. Sagar Setia, additional deputy commissioner (D)-cum-additional district program officer, MGNREGA said that last year, the district was given a target of creating 23 lakh man days, but the district outnumbered the days to provide maximum employment to its people. FAZILKA : Fazilka district bagged first rank in the state by spending the highest amount among the all districts under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Panchayat Minister of Punjab Mr. Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal gave a special award to the district during a function held at Chandigarh today for this achievement. While divulging this information Deputy Commissioner Dr. Senu Duggal IAS said that Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Mr. Sandeep Kumar has received this award for the district. Deputy Commissioner Dr Senu Duggal said that Fazilka district has spent Rs 130.41 crore against the target of spending Rs 112 crore so far. She offered her congratulations to all the officers and employees of the Rural Development Department as well as the Panchayats and MGNREGA workers for this achievement. The Deputy Commissioner said that the MGNREGA scheme is proving to be a boon for providing employment to the people in the rural areas as well as to develop the basic infrastructure in rural parts of the district. LOOK INTO ALLEGATIONS Gursimrat Singh, 29, hails from Chintgarh village of Mohali district's SAS Nagar. He is currently in Kurali in search of a job as no work is available in Chintgarh under MGNREGA from the past six months. "We are not getting any employment now. I belong to a poor family. There is no work in our village. There are dozens of unemployed youth who have been compelled to leave the village. The government should regularly provide employment under MGNREGA for common man in Punjab. MGNREGA is a scam," says Gursimrat. Harjinder Singh, 29, who hails from Kumbra village of SAS Nagar district never got a job under MGNREGA. He is sitting idle and his aged parents and brother work as labours. As claimed, no employment is available under MGNREGA in his village.
