About Miraj Tanpura

The world famous Miraj school of string instrument makers is going to complete 171 years. The City of Miraj is famous for its string musical instruments and music. The goddess of music has spread her blessings over this town. . Miraj has been a birth place of many famouse singers and musicians for centuries. Pundit Vishnu Digambar, whoes great Guru, Pundit Bal In 1850, the first string musical instrument of Maharashtra came to existance after many difficulties faced by its makers. The father of this first maharashtrian musical instrument was Shri. Faridsaheb Shilklgar and his brother Shri Mohinuddin saheb Shikalgar. Before the production of musical instruments in Miraj; the maharashtrian musicians used the instruments like- Tambora, Sitar, Been, Dilruba, Taus; which were made in North Indian cities like Jaipur, Banaras and Lakhknow. At this time in Maharashtra, wooden instruments like ' Ektari' sursote etc. were made . Because of the low cost and less hard work, the singers used the wooden musical instruments like 'sursote'. Very rare singers used the Tambora which was very costly and demanded hard work in its making. Types of Tanpuras

à à Instrumental Guides à Tanpura Tutorial Types of Tanpuras In the types of tanpuras that exist in India , there are generally two bigger classes: the North Indian (Hindustani) and South Indian ( Carnatic) models. The North Indian types are known as the “ Miraj” models as they originate from the town of Miraj . The South Indian model is known as the Tanjore tanpura. MIRAJ MODELS MALE TANPURA: These types of tanpuras are very tall. They accommodate male pitches from the key of B to D#. They have a very deep sound and hold a great deal of sustain. FEMALE TANPURA: These tanpuras are not as tall as the male ones. They are used to accommodate female pitches from the key of F to A#. TANPURI: THE INSTRUMENTAL TANPURA These small tanpuras are used to accompany an instrument, a male-ranged female vocalist, or just to use for ease of transporting the instrument around. The instrumental tanpura, also known as tanpuri, is much easier to work with as the tumba, or the sound box, is not made of gourd, like the male and female tanpuras. It is made of wood. Nowadays, ideas are being made to create fiberglass tumba tanpuras which are virtually indestructible by normal usage. TANJORE MODEL: THE CARNATIC TANPURA The Carnatic tanpura is known as the Tanjore tanpura. The body is made from a complete full block of jackwood. It's bridge made of bronze, unlike the Miraj models. NEWER MODELS: MACHINE-TUNED TANPURAS This model of the tanpuri is a more advanced version than most of the tanpuras sho...

Our History My Grandfather's Grandfather, Late FaridSaheb Satarmaker came to Miraj to rennovate the domes of the Dargah Of Miraj. At that time the Rulers of Miraj were Pathwardhan Sarkar. They were pleased with the work of Late FaridSaheb Satarmaker so they offered the work of the taking care of weapons to Late FaridSaheb Satarmaker. Few Days later the King of Miraj visited to Kashmir and was enamoured with some musical instruments he had seen there. After coming back from his visit. He asked Late FaridSaheb Satarmaker to make one musical instrument like it. From a primitive tuntuni like instrument which used a coconut shell as a base, and only one tar or string to the tambura which uses the famed pandharpur bhopla (pumpkin) it has been a long story. From that time since 1850 till date our whole family is working in the field of music by making and providing the best and finest musical instruments to the biggest music artists in world like Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Abdul Karim KhaSaheb, Gangubai Hangal, Prabha Hatre, Kumar Gandharva, Shahid Parvez, Bale Khan and many more. I have been working in this feild for last 40 years. Since I left the school in 1980. Then my guide Late Abasaheb Satarmaker guided me to get into this work. He was my inspiration too. Then I started to learn the work from my uncle and guide Late Abasaheb Satarmaker and my father Late Mhamulal HusenSaheb Satarmaker. From That Time I have been working in the music feild and providing the best and finest music...
