'Mission Majnu' movie review: Sidharth Malhotra is wasted in this witless spy thriller

Tariq, an Indian spy in Pakistan, is watching through tears as his pregnant wife boards a one-way flight to Dubai. In the nick of time, alerted officials storm the airport. They’ve got descriptions, and one of them spots Nasreen (Rashmika Mandanna). To distract them, Tariq – who’s earlier described as the best cadet in his batch, and who knows well that blowing one’s cover means certain death – climbs up on a chair and loudly chants, “Bharat Mata Ki Jai!” This scene tells you pretty much everything you need to know about Mission Majnu. Every time Shantanu Bagchi’s film – based on a real espionage operation from 1977 – runs out of wind, it resorts to silver-bullet nationalism and sentimentality as an escape route. This is apparent not only from the dialogue (“Our tricolour blows not in the wind but the dying breath of martyrs,” goes the somewhat overwrought final line) but also its use of music. ‘Maati Ko Maa Kehte Hain,’ a patriotic number voiced by Sonu Nigam and written by Manoj Muntashir, has the same treacly emotionality and imagery that marked Muntashir’s previous hit, the 2019 song ‘Teri Mitti’ from the film Kesari. We begin, expectedly, with a generic history lesson. The creation of Bangladesh in 1971 flags off a nuclear arms race between India and Pakistan. After India successfully tests its first nuclear bomb in Pokhran, Pakistan wants to do the same. They fly in scientists and build a secretive nuclear facility somewhere on the edges of Rawalpindi. To determine i...

Mission Majnu Movie Review: This is no Shershaah, but Sidharth, Rashmika's mission to entertain is a success

By Tushar Joshi: India vs Pakistan makes a great setting not just for one-day cricket matches , but also for films chronicling historical chapters from the two countries. India and Pakistan have always been at odds, so a story around their tussle makes for an intriguing watch. If you throw in a nuclear test and words like ‘atom-bomb’, the setting gets even more exciting. Shantanu Bagchi’s Mission Majnu has an interesting premise. The film revolves around a RAW agent infiltrating Pakistan to find out its nefarious designs to build an atom bomb. After India’s first successful nuclear test in 1974, a worried Pakistan decides to carry out its own test with the help of shady allies willing to sell them material to build its own bomb. Tariq aka Amandeep Singh (Sidharth Malhotra) is a RAW agent living in Pakistan. He’s married to his girlfriend Nasreen (Rashmika Mandanna) who is blind. Tariq has a murky past across the border where his father was labelled a traitor in his motherland - India. Living under the guilt of what his father did, Tariq’s life changes when he’s assigned to head India’s covert operation in Pakistan titled - Mission Majnu. As part of this mission, Tariq with his accomplices (Kumud Mishra and Sharib Hashmi) has to provide physical evidence of Pakistan’s secret attempt to carry out a nuclear test. If they fail, they risk an imminent war not only with India but also global intervention and a possibility of nuclear attacks. Mission Majnu is a period film set in ...

Mission Majnu Review: Predictable Spy Story But Watchable. Sidharth And Rashmi Are Brilliant

Spy thriller Director: Shantanu Bagchi Starring: Sidharth Malhotra, Rashmika Mandanna, Sharib Hashmi and Kumud Mishra New Delhi: Patriotism is one theme that Bollywood has always loved, and it has mostly worked for the industry. 'Mission Majnu' also uses this formula, and it looks like the film has succeeded in its mission. The story is pretty predictable and you can easily guess what it's about from the trailer. Sidharth Malhotra, who portrays Amandeep Singh, a RAW field agent, makes his living as a tailor in Pakistan. He's married to Nasreen, played by Rashmika Mandanna, who is visually challenged. After India lost the war in 1971, Pakistan tried to develop a nuclear weapon, and Sidharth's task is to find the nuclear plant. This is the central conflict of the story. To know how he does that, you will have to watch the film on Netflix! The performances are among the best aspects of this movie. The action parts are where Sidharth Malhotra really excels. However, Rashmika Mandanna, who plays a girl who is blind, is brilliant. Mandanna's character has a charming innocence. Kumud Mishra and Sharib Hashmi provided the two with excellent support and put on their usual stellar performances. The direction by Shantanu Bagchi is also noteworthy; the screenplay is tight, and the film moves at a good pace. It gives you goosebumps at places and comes to the point very early, not wasting much time in unnecessary sequences. The music by Ketan Sodha is also soothing. Tracks like 'Rabba J...

‘Mission Majnu’ movie review: Siddharth Malhotra cannot be undercover in this formulaic mission

A generic spy thriller that overtly dramatises true events from our prickly relationship with Pakistan, Mission Majnu doesn’t add much to our knowledge and understanding of the universe where undercover agents operate. Set against the backdrop of Pakistan’s desperation to create its own atom bomb after Buddha smiled in Pokharan in 1974, director Siddharth Bagchi follows the exploits of an undercover agent Tariq/Amandeep (Siddharth Malhotra) to expose Pakistan’s secret plan to achieving parity as a nuclear power. Storyline: In the 1970s, an undercover Indian spy takes on a deadly mission to expose a covert nuclear weapons programme in the heart of Pakistan. There are parts of the screenplay that read like a Wikipedia page, where the makers seem eager to flaunt real-life characters like spymaster R.N. Kao (Parmeet Sethi) and the political figures involved in the political and intelligence slugfest. And then are those that are fictionalised, like how Tariq who works as a tailor stitches an amorous bond with a blind girl Nasreen (Rashmika Mandana). His handler (Zakir Hussain) on phone comes across as a caricature. As a result, the confluence of background details and the fictional histrionics of the foreground doesn’t really happen. Siddharth is a little too eye catchy to slip into the character of a spy in a film that is trying to be realistic. Unlike his fellow spies, played by Sharib Hashmi and Kumud Mishra, he keeps the pitch higher than the situation demands. The ease wit...
