Maharashtra MLC Election Results 2021: BJP jolts MVA in Maharashtra MLC polls by bagging 4/6 seats; Fadnavis hails 'decisive win'

In a big boost for BJP, it trounced the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance comprising Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP to win 4 out of the 6 seats in the Maharashtra MLC polls. The poll-bound seats were earlier held by Ramdas Kadam (Shiv Sena), Bhai Jagtap (Congress), Satej Patil (Congress), Amrish Patel (BJP), Gopikishan Bajoria (Shiv Sena) and Girish Vyas (BJP). While Shiv Sena’s Sunil Shinde, Congress' Satej Patil and BJP’s Rajhans Singh and Amrish Patel were elected unopposed, a direct face-off between MVA and the saffron party ensued in Nagpur and Akola-Buldhana-Washim that went to the polls on December 10. BJP had fielded Chandrashekhar Bawankule who served as the Energy Minister in the erstwhile Devendra Fadnavis-led government from Nagpur. Though Congress gave a ticket to BJP turncoat and 4-time corporator Ravindra Bhoyar from this seat, it replaced him owing to his lacklustre campaigning and instead extended support to Mangesh Deshmukh, an independent candidate. As per the first-preference vote count, Chandrashekhar Bawankule secured 362 votes as against 186 votes of Mangesh Deshmukh. In Akola-Buldhana-Washim, BJP's Vasant Khandelwal beat Shiv Sena's Gopikishan Bajoria by 109 votes. Reacting to this win, ex-Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis remarked, "Today, I am very happy that my associate Chandrashekhar Bawankule has secured a big win. In fact, I am feeling happier at the victory of Chandrashekhar Bawankule than my own election victory. This victory is a slap on MVA. Similar...

Maharashtra MLC Polls 2022: Stakes high for MVA as BJP eyes re

Claiming instability in the ruling MVA, BJP's Pravin Darekar said, "We are confident of our victory. MVA leaders have not performed well in these two and a half years. There is miscommunication in the alliance. Whereas our leadership is very strong and capable. We will win all the 5 seats." BJP candidate Prasad Lad also said he was 100% certain of his victory. Meanwhile, Congress, though low on numbers, has also expressed confidence in winning both seats in the MLC elections. Hitting out at his saffron opponents, Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole said, "All six candidates of MVA will win with a full majority. BJP is greedy. It is misusing agencies to target MLAs. BJP will lose due to their overconfidence and greed." Given its strength in the Assembly, the BJP can get four of the five candidates elected, the Sena and the NCP two each, and the Congress one. Both the BJP and Congress are banking on support from independent candidates to bag the 10th seat. Rebel Sena leader Shinde, in a phone conversation with Uddhav Thackeray, urged him to renew the party's alliance with the BJP, a senior Sena leader claimed. The leader said Thackeray had sent his confidante Milind Narvekar and Shinde's aide Ravindra Phatak to Surat to talk to the rebel leader. "The chief minister also had a telephonic conversation with Shinde during which the latter asked him to renew ties with the BJP and break the alliance with Congress and the NCP," the leader said. Thackeray's response to Shinde's demand was not known, the leader said. Thackeray launched a damage control exercise and sent an emissary to Surat, where Shinde is camping. How BJP is using Rajya Sabha and Maharashtra MLC polls to bring ‘MVA cracks’ to the fore

Mumbai: Halfway into the five-year term of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition in Maharashtra, the opposition BJP is attempting to corner the Uddhav Thackeray-led alliance by indirectly forcing it to prove its strength in the assembly. The BJP is trying to play on the inherent insecurities of the MVA — comprising former ideological rivals Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress — using the Rajya Sabha and Member of Legislative Council (MLC) elections. As a gambit, it has fielded more candidates than it has the strength to get elected in both the polls. Going by its 106 MLAs in the 288-member assembly, the BJP can comfortably win 2 of the 6 Rajya Sabha seats on 10 June, but it has fielded 3 candidates. Similarly, the BJP has the strength to get 4 members elected in the legislative council, but has fielded 5 candidates for the MLC election on 20 June. Both the elections will effectively test the MVA’s strength in the Maharashtra assembly for the first time since the All this has pushed the MVA, which has had its Political commentator Hemant Desai said that the BJP’s attempts to needle the MVA have only brought the three allies more strongly together. “The BJP’s attempt was to put the MVA in a state of chaos, but it is not exactly playing out the way it expected. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is leaving no stone unturned in securing the support for the MVA candidates in the elections and seems quite confident,” he added. Also Read: Th...
