Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs)

The List of Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for Veterinary Drugs in Foods includes "no MRL required" status for some veterinary drugs in certain foods. The predicted levels of residues of these veterinary drugs in foods, under the approved conditions of use, are considered not to pose a risk to human health due to a variety of factors which include: the drug is of low toxicity or is generally recognized as safe, is poorly absorbed or bioavailable, is rapidly metabolized or eliminated, is likely infrequently used, is a normal component of the human diet, or represents a small fraction of endogenous production. The decision on the safety to the consumer is made based on the totality of the evidence, and is specific to the approved conditions of use in a species of animal. Consequently, for the protection of human health, there is no need to routinely monitor the residues of these veterinary drugs in specified foods. Maximum Residue Limits are established by regulatory agencies for purposes of monitoring of residues of chemicals (veterinary drugs, pesticides, inorganic chemicals, etc.) in food. In the US, they are called tolerances and are established by the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) Center for Veterinary for Veterinary Medicine (CVM). While efforts are made to harmonize, our respective conclusions may sometimes result in establishing different MRLs or tolerances for veterinary drugs. In Canada, VDD bases veterinary drug marketing, labeling and the establishment...

Manufacturing readiness level

The manufacturing readiness level ( MRL) is a measure to assess the maturity of manufacturing readiness, similar to how The MRLs are quantitative measures used to assess the maturity of a given technology, component or system from a manufacturing perspective. They are used to provide decision makers at all levels with a common understanding of the relative maturity and attendant risks associated with manufacturing technologies, products, and processes being considered. Manufacturing risk identification and management must begin at the earliest stages of technology development, and continue vigorously throughout each stage of a program’s life-cycles. Manufacturing readiness level definitions were developed by a joint DOD/industry working group under the sponsorship of the Joint Defense Manufacturing Technology Panel (JDMTP). The intent was to create a measurement scale that would serve the same purpose for manufacturing readiness as Technology Readiness Levels serve for technology readiness – to provide a common metric and vocabulary for assessing and discussing manufacturing maturity, risk and readiness. MRLs were designed with a numbering system to be roughly congruent with comparable levels of TRLs for synergy and ease of understanding and use. Why manufacturing readiness? [ ] • Manufacturing risk identification and management must begin at the earliest stages of technology development, and continue vigorously throughout each stage of a program’s life-cycle. • Matters of...

Maximum residue limits (MRL)

The The European Union (EU) requires by law that foodstuffs such as meat, milk or eggs must not contain residue levels of veterinary medicines or biocidal products that might represent a hazard to the health of the consumer. Before a veterinary medicine intended for food-producing animals is authorised in the EU, the safety of its pharmacologically EMA uses human dietary exposure assessments to establish MRLs of pharmacologically EMA worked closely with the For more information, see: • The biocidal products for use in animal husbandry.
