New today, the original thriller directed by Shirish Kunder and produced, one assumes not at all coincidentally, by his wife Farah Khan, sees Sri Lankan model and actress Jacqueline Fernandez as a doting wife whose husband is charged with committing a string of heinous crimes. This isn’t novel on its own, of course, but when Fernandez’s character develops the idea of staging a copycat spree to prove her husband’s innocence, we start to enter much more intriguing territory. You might remember Fernandez from such films as Netflix’s utterly woeful Drive, but try not to think too much about that. This is a much meatier part better suited to her talents, and her already-substantial fan base will no doubt find a lot to like in what Mrs. Serial Killer is able to get out of her in terms of performance. About halfway way into Mrs Serial Killer, written and directed by Shirish Kunder, the alarm bells begin to ring. Is Manoj Bajpayee, the sole reason for watching this Netflix thriller, going to be no more than a glorified extra in this insipid thriller? And then a bit of a crackle and a twist. The actor explodes. He is granted a little over 30 minutes to put on a full-on performance. He goes all out! The final moments of Mrs Serial Killer are therefore far more watchable than its first hour and a bit. But Bajpayee's brilliance is hardly enough to paper over the inanities that are passed off as generic sleights as the film lurches to its climax. Bajpayee plays a hotshot gynaecological surgeon, Mrityunjoy Mukherjee, who is suspected of being a serial killer and taken into police custody. The dismembered bodies of six missing girls are found in the doctor's half-built farmhouse. No lawyer is willing to represent him. When he is escorted into a courtroom, a belligerent crowd shouts, "Hang the killer!" And when he is led out after the judge rejects his bail plea, he is assaulted by an angry mob. Even in prison, fellow inmates pounce upon him and leave him with grievous injuries. Mrityunjoy's distraught wife Sona (Jacqueline Fernandez) seeks the help of criminal lawyer Brij Rastogi (Darshan Jariwala), an old pal of the doctor, to prove the innocence of the accused. Inspector Imran Shahid, who is also Sona's ex-boyfriend, visits her house to collect evidence against Joy in a serial killing case. Sona thinks Shahid is just trying to frame Joy to take revenge on him for taking away his love. The serial killing case is that of six girls who went missing; their bodies were found in an isolated house owned by Joy. All the victims were unmarried and pregnant and were then aborted and dismembered. Joy, a Sona is a kind person and unwilling to hurt anyone but finally agrees after she is convinced that there's no other way to prove Joy's innocence. She agrees to break the law to help Joy get out of jail; things go downhill from there. Ex-boyfriend and cop Imran drinks excessively, gets into fights, enjoys using his power to annoy and inconvenience people.
