Ms. Marvel Episode 4 Recap: ‘Seeing Red’

Photo: Marvel Studios All but three scenes of “Seeing Red” take place in Karachi. One opens in the air right before Kamala Khan lands in Pakistan for the first time. Another is set at a classified Department of Damage Control (DODC) black site to reintroduce the show’s antagonists. A third unfolds somewhere in India in 1947 — a vision or perhaps something more — ending this week on a cliff-hanger that’s both audacious and emotionally charged. Along the way, Kamala begins to find herself not merely through the discovery of her remixed lore but through a trip to a homeland she doesn’t know and through quiet, intimate experiences that make her feel as though she can eventually carve out a place for herself as a teenager torn between worlds. The episode has plenty of bombast and a zippy, claustrophobic chase sequence to boot, but much of its running time is spent following Kamala through Karachi as she catches up with family and discovers parts of the city (and its history) on her own. It makes sense, then, to hand the reins to Pakistani-born director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, whose documentary films (including the exploration of jazz-classical fusion Song of Lahore) beat with lived experience and whose animated work, such as the moving Netflix short Sitara: Let Girls Dream, blends grim reality with gorgeous fantasy. The decision pays dividends the moment Kamala steps out of Jinnah International Airport; she may be an outsider, but the setting is more familiar to her than foreign...

Sloth Baby Productions Presents: ‘Ms. Marvel’ Episode 4

Do the rules of grounding stretch to international waters? tense. The poor unsuspecting passenger in the middle seat between them has no idea the world of trouble Kamala has recently caused her family, but hearing things like “ruined your brother's wedding” certainly cues him in — Muneeba is still pretty upset with her daughter. It also doesn’t help that Kamala has been texting Nakia non-stop and hasn’t received a single reply. Finally, on the ground, Kamala is overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of the bustling city around her. Waiting at the airport are her cousins who have come to greet them, and one very special guest: Sana, Muneeba’s mom and Kamala’s grandmother. Sana is elated to see her granddaughter, bringing her in for a hug and a kiss and immediately offering up the jewelry on her wrists; as for her reunion with Muneeba, it’s a little cooler as she wonders if her daughter is on another weird diet. The three women pile into the car and head off for Sana’s house, a sprawling estate in the city chock full of family history, knickknacks, and Sana’s artwork. As she tells Kamala, so much of her family’s history was lost during Partition so she wanted to record some of it as best she could — art seems to be the perfect medium. Sana shows Kamala a painting she did of her mother, Aisha, done off memory since she can barely remember what the woman looked like all those years ago. For Kamala, this is a great segue way into asking about the bangle…why did Nani send it to Ka...

With her jeans and New Jersey AvengerCon T-shirt and her difficulties with the food, Kamala is a classic ABCD (American-Born Confused Desi). But even here in Karachi, her nani Sana wrestles with her identity, torn between Indian roots and Pakistani nationality -- born of "a border marked with blood and pain ... based on an idea some old Englishman had." According to showrunner Bisha K. Ali, this episode is drawn from the experiences of the writers and from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a Pakistani Canadian journalist and filmmaker who has won several Oscars and Emmys for powerful documentaries often tackling horrifying subjects like honor killings and child soldiers. Sana painted a picture of her mother Aisha (Kamala's great-grandmother), who was a djinn and disappeared during the Partition of India. Sana casually reveals she knows about the djinn, and once again links the bangle's vision of the train with the fateful night Ai...

Ms. Marvel Episode 4 Review

Home is where the heart is, or so the popular idiom goes, but Ms. Marvel proves it isn’t as straightforward. In this week’s fourth episode, Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and her mother Muneeba (Zenobia Shroff) fly to Pakistan for a long overdue family reunion, which leads to an enlightening experience for the Khans and the audience alike. It is another eventful, entertaining episode that packs in world-building mythology alongside an exploration of historical events that caused a real-life rupture, and Ms. Marvel continues to surprise with its capacity to juggle both story threads. Academy Award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy immediately captures the teenager’s overwhelmed yet excited state as she experiences Karachi, the home her parents left decades before. Jersey City is the only home Kamala has ever known, and removing her from the familiar takes the teenager further out of her comfort zone. Even though she isn’t entirely comfortable in her own skin in the United States, her friendships keep her grounded, and Kamala has some semblance of who she is. A fractured identity runs in the family, and moving Kamala away from her support group enables Ms. Marvel to continue digging into the rupture that led to this concept of the divided self. Play The family reunion with Sana (Samina Ahmed) is joyous but not without tension. There is more than one elephant in the room as Kamala has questions for her nani about the bracelet, whereas Muneeba still harbors resentment. All th...

Ms. Marvel Episode 4 Review: Seeing Red

This review contains Ms. Marvel spoilers Ms. Marvel Episode 4 Even though there’s a lot going on in Ms. Marvel episode four, “Seeing Red”, we still we don’t learn a whole lot more than we did last week. It’s kinda par for the course with these MCU In “Seeing Red”, Kamala and her mother travel to Karachi to visit with her elderly Nani, so Bruno, Nakia, and the rest of the Khans sit this one out. Muneeba has a strained relationship with her own mother because her fantastical “theories” swamped Muneeba’s childhood experiences and made her feel isolated, but it’s clear that they still have a strong connection and could be close to patching things up, especially if some of those “theories” turn out to be true in the very near future. At this point in her life, Nani seems to have ceased trying to explain them, hinting to Kamala that less of that stuff is important compared to the real outcomes of the bangle’s power, and that they can probably figure it out together, but saying “If you have lived like I have, lost what I have, you learn to find beauty in the pieces.” I’m not crying, you’re crying. I remain stoic and unaffected! And if you claim otherwise, I shall see you in court. Good day! Sniff. After some family visits and tourist activities with her cousins, Kamala makes her way to the train station in Karachi to do some investigating, where she wears her new mask for the first time. Thrilling enough, but we’ll have to wait until at least next week before we finally see her f...
