MSSA news: Cambridge School are the champions

Cambridge School (Kandivli) produced a determined second-half performance to quell the spirited challenge from St Joseph’s (Wadala) and charge to a comfortable 3-0 win in the boys’ U-16 Division-II final of the MSSA inter-school football tournament at Cooperage, Churchgate, on Monday. The Cambridge lads started in attacking fashion and scored three quick goals to knock the fight out of their Wadala rivals. Attacking midfielder Ninad Mohite, 15, orchestrated the Cambridge attacks and after Tanuj Waingankar struck the opening goal, he hit the target twice to ensure Cambridge emerged champions. ADVERTISEMENT ‘It’s a great feeling’ “It’s a great feeling to win something in the final year of school. It’s nice to give something back to the school. We played well as a team throughout and were confident of winning. We have been training almost daily on the school ground under coach Tushar Poojari and all our hard-work has paid off,” Ninad told mid-day. Also Read: The first goal came when Tanuj picked up teammate Neel Shah’s forward pass and cut into the box before firing home from close. Later, Ninad broke through St Joseph’s defence and deftly flicked the ball into the net for the team’s second goal. He was again on target, scoring off a Neel cross from a corner kick just before half-time. Smt RSB AVM win third place Earlier, in the third-place match, Smt RSB Arya Vidya Mandir (Juhu) overcame Bombay Scottish (Powai) 5-4 via tie-breaker after both the teams failed to score in regu...

Montana Shooting Sports Association's Gary Marbut Out of Surgery

Due to a scheduling mixup here at St. Pat’s, we learned only yesterday afternoon that this surgery was scheduled for today rather than tomorrow. The surgery is now complete. Reports throughout the 5-hour open-heart surgery, including the wrap-up report, all indicated that everything went smoothly and according to plan. As of now (Weds afternoon), they moved Gary to the ICU for the immediate surgery recovery period, and he will have his own room sometime tomorrow. I’ll update you again tomorrow when the surgery results will be more final, but for now, everything is looking good. I expect Dad to be back on e-mail maybe Friday, likely Saturday, or maybe Sunday, and my rough guess is that they’ll discharge him on Monday or Tuesday. His birthday is tomorrow, the 24th. MSSA Hockey Secretary Lawrence Bing turns in his resignation letter

Source: What exactly forced Bing to take such step? Last year, MSSA, one of Asia’s oldest school associations, embroiled itself in a slew of controversies. One of them was violating the registration deadline for the U-16 sub-junior hockey nationals. They didn’t even adhere to the schedule by not declaring a squad until the very last minute. Naturally, there were a lot of questions and accusations. When asked about it, Sebastian Fernandes, the association’s football secretary, answered, “Why don’t you ask the hockey secretary (Lawrence Bing).” However, according to Bing, he was completely unaware of the situation. Not only this, there were a lot of situations that were being handled improperly. Source: In an interview with Sportz Point, Lawrence Bing expressed himself clearly. In his words, “Why I gave resignation is, MSSA hockey body is a big body. I am the hockey secretary there. When the teams are going for nationals, there is a procedure of selection trials, ground booking and all. MSSA president Father Jude Rodriguez used to go with the team as a manager. Sometimes as a coach as well. No proper practice, selection trials were taken. Even the women’s team also travelled without coach and manager” Bing expressed his dissatisfaction at being sidelined and left out on numerous important occasions. “Letters were going from football secretary. At the selection table also, the football secretary used to sit. All these things were happening .” Even he got accused of stating so...

Don Bosco, Scottish ooze confidence as MSSA football resumes after two

After a two-year hiatus, the MSSA (Mumbai Schools’ Sports Association) inter-school football tournament resumes with the boys U-16 Div-I matches at the St Francis D’Assisi HS ground, Borivli, from Monday. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MSSA had suspended all tournaments in 2020 and conducted only a few non-contact sports events in 2021. Fifteen school teams, including Don Bosco (Matunga), the 2019 champions and runners-up Bombay Scottish (Mahim) have been divided into four groups. Also Read: ADVERTISEMENT Don Bosco goalkeeper Atharva Gaonkar said his team are confident of getting positive results. “Having recently reached the DSO [District Sports Office] Mumbai City final [which they lost to Campion via tie-breaker] gives us the confidence to beat any team. The team are short of practice as many players have recently been down with viral fever. But everyone is available for our opening game on Monday [v St Mary’s ICSE],” Atharva told mid-day. Bombay Scottish captain Aadiv Das is happy to see MSSA football resume. “It’s great that MSSA football is back after two years. We have a bunch of skillful ball players and our chemistry is excellent as most of us were part of the U-12 team that had emerged champions,” said Aadiv.
