Mulayam Singh Yadav: The 'wrestler' who won many political battles in UP

• Mulayam Singh Yadav founded the Samajwadi (Socialist) Party in 1992. • He served three times as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh (1989–91, 1993–95, and 2003–07). • Mulayam was born to a poor peasant’s family on November 22, 1939. He was born in Saifai village in Etawah district of UP. • He initially wanted to become a wrestler, but went to college and completed a master’s degree in political science from Agra University. • He became involved in politics at the age of 15 when he encountered the writing of socialist Ram Manohar Lohia. Lohia’s convictions on the equality of peoples and other social-justice issues strongly influenced Yadav’s own ideas and subsequent political career. • Yadav’s first electoral victory came in 1967 when he won a seat in the lower chamber of the Uttar Pradesh assembly from Jaswantnagar. He was reelected in 1974, but his term was interrupted when he was one of the opposition politicians arrested in 1975 and held for 19 months during the national state of emergency imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. After his release in 1977, he contested and won back his seat in the assembly. • He had been jailed nine times during different agitations for the protection of rights and welfare of farmers, labourers, youth, students, minorities and backward classes. • In 1977, Yadav also became the president of the Lok Dal (People’s Party) in Uttar Pradesh. • In 1980, Yadav was elected president of the Janata Dal (JD). • In 1989, JD,with outside support of the...

Notably to protect the Babri Mosque (later demolished), Yadav (as Chief Minister) ordered the police to use force on the kar sevaks (volunteers) on two separate occassions in October and November 1990. Later he would express regret at the firings but, said it was necessary and justified to protect a religious place the unity of India. Once he gave me an early morning time for an interview and was present in the studio before the time. "SP Patron and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav is no more. He breathed his last at 8:15 am today. He was admitted in Medanta since August 22. Was on ventilator since 2 October. The body of the SP Patron will be taken to Saifai in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh," the statement read. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced three-day state mourning and said that Mulayam Singh's last rites of will be performed with full state honours. The last rites of Mulayam Singh Yadav will be held at Saifai, his ancestral village in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party said on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the former UP CM and remembered him as "a key soldier for democracy during the Emergency". "Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji distinguished himself in UP and national politics. He was a key soldier for democracy during the Emergency. As Defence Minister, he worked for a stronger India. His Parliamentary interventions were insightful and emphasised on furthering national interest," PM Modi tweeted. The three-time UP CMHe was first elected into the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha at the age of 28 in 1967. He first became a state minister in 1977 and became the president of the Lok Dal (People's Party) in 1980. He served as leader of the opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council for five years till 1985. When the Lok Dal party split, Mulayam launched the Krantikari Morcha Party.

While he was undergoing treatment at the Medanta Hospital in Gurugram since August 22, Yadav was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on October 2 after his health deteriorated. Since then, his condition remained critical and was put on life-saving drugs. Apart from his son Akhilesh Yadav, daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav and other SP workers, leaders from across party lines including Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, CPI general secretary D Raja and RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary visited the hospital to check on Yadav. Scores of men and some machines worked through the night amid drizzle to create a platform for conducting the last rites of socialist leader Mulayam Singh Yadav in UP's Saifai on Tuesday. They also raised a huge tarpaulin pandal supported by metal frames to cover the area before the platform amid drizzles and overcast skies. Both the platform and the pandal are created inside the Mela ground premises, where the famous annual Saifai Mahotsav was held until five years ago. The platform is made of brick and cement and is around three-feet high with soil filled in it.
