Tension gripped the city on Tuesday (June 6) after two men allegedly put 18th-century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan’s image along with an offensive audio message as their social media "status". Kolhapur saw massive protests on Wednesday morning, as people from some right-wing outfits gathered at the Shivaji Maharaj Chowk around 10 am and started raising slogans against the two accused who posted a status glorifying Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. “We will not tolerate the glorification of Mughal leaders on our Maratha land. We are ready to pick up swords for the protection of Hindu society. This will not be tolerated,” an aggressive protester said. The development came amid growing communal tensions in certain parts of the state, over a social media post praising Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The memorial was constructed by Dr Farooq Anwar Shah, a local legislator affiliated with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party. Burkund said some people had filed a complaint with the administration, highlighting the construction of an unauthorised monument of Tipu Sultan. "After a thorough investigation and discussions with legislator Farooq Shah, the monument was removed," the SP said, "The action caused no disturbances in the city, he added. Kolhapur clashes: Normalcy returns after violence over Tipu Sultan post; police deployment continues

By PTI PUNE: After the recent violence during a demonstration against the alleged use of Tipu Sultan's image and an objectionable audio message as social media status by a few locals, regular activities resumed in Kolhapur city of Maharashtra but police personnel continue to be deployed in large numbers across the city, especially at sensitive places, an official said on Friday. The next day, the police had to disperse hundreds of protesters after they hurled stones during a demonstration at Shivaji Chowk against the alleged use of Tipu Sultan's image. At least 36 people have been arrested and cases registered in connection with the violence, police said. ALSO READ | Kolhapur Superintendent of Police Mahendra Pandit said the situation is getting back to normal and regular activities are taking place in the city. "The order on keeping the internet services shut was applicable till 10 am on Friday. The nodal officers of the internet service providers have already been communicated through the order, but it takes some time to fully activate all the service towers," he said. Talking about the probe in connection with the violence, Pandit said, "Some more people have been identified, but they are still absconding.
