What makes a component truly great? One would hope that a very high level of circuit design plays a big part in the overall result but that often gets confused with industrial design and features; as we’ve learned from the home theater category that is rife with components that offer features that consumers never use, and high-end audio components with 3-inch-thick faceplates for no apparent reason. If you think adding over 100 pounds of metal to a component makes it sonically worthwhile and justifies some exorbitant price tag – you’ve drank one too many glasses of the Kool-Aid. Unpacking and Handling Despite some unmistakable similarities in the display, the NAD M33 already looks and feels much more dignified than the smaller M10. This is primarily due to the solid aluminum front panel and the black frame attached to it. By implementing the large, touch-sensitive display, the number of other operating elements was reduced drastically – only the sizable volume control catches the eye. However, we would have liked it to be a little smoother or if it were a latching step switch. At the moment, it is somewhere between smooth and velvety. In the end, though, that is a matter of taste. While we are already complaining: Unfortunately, the display instruments (which can be switched off) do not show the power output, but the input level instead – a peculiarity that probably only few users can identify and appreciate. Of course you can still enjoy looking at the pointers jumping around happily. If we look at the top of the device, we see that the openings for cooling the components are cut out very precisely. The accuracy of the exactly fitting heavy lid is also excellent. The screws literally fall into the conical cut-outs – that's really good metalwork. There is even more, because it is also worth looking at the underside of the M33: massive cones made of aluminum connect the unit to the ground. I purchased this amplifier as factory-reconditioned (essentially in brand-new condition). I needed a 3-channel amplifier to go along with my 2-channel Pass X350.5. Three channel amplifiers are becoming harder to find and this is the only one that Pass makes. Its voicing is close enough the behemoth 350.5 to allow it to drive the center and surround speakers. . Like most of the Pass X series, there is need for adequate ventilation around the amplifier. Since it is much smaller than the higher power X-series, it is easier to place in a surround system setting. Over the time that I have integrated this amplifier into my system, I have become impressed with what great value it is for the sound quality received. Pass does make a 5-channel amplifier (X-5). For those like myself who already have a high-quality stereo front-end, the X-3 is great alternative. I have been on a long search for a 3 channel amplifier. I listen primarily to two channel, so it had to be on par with other quality two channel amps and I did not want mono's Well, after owning and demoing many, I feel I found the best one.
