Litmus solution: • Litmus is a combination of organic substances obtained from lichens such as Lecanora tartare and Rocella tinctotum. • Lichen is a composite creature that develops from a mutualistic connection between algae and cyanobacteria. • Litmus solution is made by dissolving a natural dye derived from lichens in distilled water. • The purpose of this solution is to distinguish between acids and bases. When we add acid to the litmus solution, it turns red, and when we add a base, it turns blue. Therefore, litmus solution is obtained from lichens and it is used in predicting the nature of the solution i.e. acid or base.
