SURAT: A sessions court in the city ordered including Asaram’s son Narayan Sai as an accused in a case of attack on one of the witnesses in the rape case against Sai in 2014. So far, nine accused have been arrested in the case and three separate chargesheets were filed by the police. The court of additional sessions judge Robin Mogera on Monday ordered issuing summons to Sai to remain present in the court on February 13. Convicted of rape and sexual assault, Sai is currently lodged in the Lajpore Central Jail in Surat. In the case, the husband of the rape survivor lodged the complaint after he was attacked on February 28, 2014. He was also one of the key witnesses in the case. “Soon after the attack, the victim had alleged Sai’s involvement in the attack. However, his involvement was only recently found in the case,” said P M Parmar, special public prosecutor in the case. “From the above all evidence, it clearly transpires that the persons who were involved in attacking the complainant and the person who had attacked the complainant were closely related to the proposed accused,” the court observed in its order. “Moreover, looking at the entire charge-sheet, perusing a motive attributed to all such accused persons is that to eliminate or threaten the witnesses, who have deposed against the proposed accused,” the order further reads. A Surat court on Tuesday sentenced Narayan Sai, son of self-styled godman Asaram, to life imprisonment while three of his accomplices were awarded ten years jail term each. Earlier this week, the court had held Sai guilty of raping a woman disciple multiple times from 2001 to 2006. Besides Sai, his close aides Hanuman, Ganga and Jamuna have been awarded ten years jail while and another aide and driver Ramesh Malhotra has been given six months jail. The court has also directed to five Rs5 lakh as compensation to the victim The court had found Sai guilty of “intercourse against the order of nature, with assault and criminal force to the victim with the intention to outrage her modesty among other charges. The case against Sai and others had been registered in 2013 following the complaint lodged by one of the sisters based in Surat. The other sister had filed a similar complaint against Sai’s father Asaram whose trail is being held in Ahmedabad. Asaram is serving life imprisonment in Rajasthan jail for raping a minor girl. There are 20 other accused in the case whose trial has been stayed by the court. In his defence, Sai had argued before the court that the victim, despite these allegations, stayed at the ashram for several years from the alleged offence and worked as an administrator in Surat ashram. Supreme Court stays release of Narayan Sai on furlough

In December 2020, Sai was granted a two-week furlough to visit his ailing mother in Ahmedabad. Six months later, he appealed for furlough again and was granted one by the Gujarat High Court on June 24. However, the High Court by a separate order stayed his release. This order was to expire on Friday. The furlough was to take effect from Friday as the High Court had stayed till then the operation of its own order. Narayan Sai, son of Asaram Bapu, was sentenced to life imprisonment in a rape case on Tuesday, 30 April, reported news agency ANI. Sai was convicted in the rape case, brought forward by two sisters in Surat, by a sessions court in Surat on Friday. Apart from life imprisonment, Sai has also been fined Rs 1 lakh, reported The court has produced 53 witnesses against Narayan Sai in the case, prompting him to go underground when the case was registered. He was later arrested in 2013 on the Delhi-Haryana border, two months after the FIR was registered.
