Over 450 church‐goers from approximately 16 villages in Narayanpur and Kondagaon, a large majority of whom were women and young children, had sought shelter in the Indoor Stadium. Some of these had been beaten up and physically driven out of their homes by other villagers; while others had fled their villages out of fear after receiving multiple warnings, beatings and ultimatums to renounce the church. Most of these displaced people had been regularly going to church for the past 5‐8 years, but tensions have erupted only over the past few months following the formation of the BJP‐RSS backed Janjaati Suraksha Manch, which has been demanding the de‐reservation of “converted Adivasis”. A mob of hundreds of villagers vandalized a Catholic church in the Chhattisgarh state of India on Monday as tensions continue to rise between the area's indigenous people who follow an animist religion and Christians. Villagers armed with wooden sticks and iron rods barged into Sacred Heart Church at Edka village on Jan. 2, in the southern region of Narayanpur district, according to the Catholic nonprofit news agency The mob broke the church's windows and damaged the altar, crucifix, multiple pieces of furniture and statues. The villagers also vandalized a Marian grotto and a presbytery. This was a backlash to Christianity from locals who are opposed to the religion. Instead of peacefully being allowed to worship, the local villagers turned violent and left the church building in complete shambles. UCA News quotes parish priest Father Jomon Devasia to "The mob destroyed everything, the church and the presbytery," Devasia stated. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel promised action would be taken against the perpetrators of the vandalism. On January 2, a group of tribals in the Narayanpur district staged a protest against what they claimed was the “forced conversion” of members of the tribal community to Christianity. The protest descended into violence, and a church was vandalized. Broken chairs and papers were seen scattered about in a video of the church, which was erected on the grounds of Vishwa Dipti High School in Narayanpur, just one kilometer from the district administrative center. A man was seen on another video damaging a statue of the Virgin Mary that had been placed on the church’s property. The incident also resulted in damage to another statue of Jesus Christ. In connection with the attack on a church inside a school and an assault on police officers on Monday, Narayanpur police detained five people on Tuesday, including a local BJP leader. Three separate FIRs have been filed by the police against unidentified individuals for rioting, assaulting police officers, and vandalizing a church.
