NEW DELHI: An apex body on wildlife conservation on Friday recommended designation of October 5 as 'National Dolphin Day' and considered green nod to as many as 46 projects including strategic roads and border outposts in Bihar has already been celebrating October 5 as 'Dolphin Day' for the past several years. Idea behind recommending the designation of October 5 as 'National Dolphin Day' is to generate awareness and encourage community participation for the conservation of this species wherever it's found in the country. The decision in this regard was taken by the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL), apex body which takes calls on all wildlife conservation issues in India, in its 67th meeting of the "Generating awareness and community participation is integral for conservation of this indicator species," said environment minister Dolphins act as ideal ecological indicators of a healthy aquatic ecosystem. Its conservation will, therefore, help survival of the species and also benefit the people dependent on the aquatic system for their livelihood.
