She will be facing former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha, who was selected as the joint Opposition candidate in the upcoming election. WHO IS DROUPADI MURMU? Droupadi Murmu was born in the Santhal community of Odisha’s Baidaposi village on June 20, 1958. Prior to her entry into politics, she taught children as a school teacher and worked as a junior assistant in the irrigation and power department for four years till 1983. Droupadi Murmu was elected twice as an MLA on a BJP ticket from the Rairangpur constituency in 2000 and 2004. In 2002, she was appointed as the Commerce and Transport Minister in the Naveen Patnaik cabinet. In 2004, Murmu was appointed as the Fisheries and Animal Development Minister in Naveen Pattnaik’s second term as chief minister. She became the governor of Jharkhand in 2015. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Tuesday announced former Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu name as Presidential candidate for the upcoming elections. Making the announcement, BJP chief JP Nadda said that for the first time, preference has been given to a woman tribal candidate. "We announce Draupadi Murmu as NDA's candidate for the upcoming Presidential elections," Nadda said. The decision was taken during a Parliamentary Board meeting chaired on Tuesday evening. By Express News Service VIJAYAWADA: National Democratic Alliance (NDA) presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu called on YSRC president and Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and Opposition Leader and Telugu Desam supremo N Chandrababu Naidu here on Tuesday as part of her election campaign in Andhra Pradesh. The ruling YSRC and opposition TDP have already announced their support to Murmu. Accompanied by Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy, Murmu arrived at Gannavaram airport and from there she went to Jagan's residence at Tadepalli. She was welcomed by Jagan and his wife YS Bharathi and blessed by priests of Durga temple. Along with Kishan and Jagan, Murmu later went to a Convention Centre in Mangalagiri, where she was introduced to YSRC MLAs and MPs.
