R Venkataramani appointed as new Attorney General of India; to succeed KK Venugopal

R Venkataramani joined the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu as a lawyer in July 1977. Practising in the Supreme Court since 1979, Venkataramani was nominated as a senior advocate by the top court in 1997. He was appointed as a Member of the Law Commission, in 2010 and again in the year 2013 for another term.

NEW DELHI: The Central government on Wednesday appointed senior advocate R Venkataramani as the new Attorney General of India for a period of three years. This comes days after senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi declined Centre's offer to return as the attorney general. Rohatgi said that there was no specific reason behind his decision. Venkataramani is one of the top lawyers in the country and has dealt in matters as varied as constitutional law, environmental law, taxation, tribal rights, and child and women’s rights. (Photo credit: Llyod Law College) A statement from the law ministry read, “The President is pleased to appoint Shri R Venkataramani, Senior Advocate, as Attorney General of India for a period of three years from the date he enters upon his office.” He will succeed KK Venugopal, whose term will end on September 30. Venugopal, 91, was appointed to the post in July 2017. He was reappointed as the top law officer of the country for three months on June 29. The appointment came days after Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi refused to take up the role. Rohatgi had been the attorney general in the first Narendra Modi government between June 2014 and June 2017.
