R Venkataramani appointed as the Attorney General of India for three years

Venkataramani will take over from incumbent K.K. Venugopal whose tenure will expire on September 30. A notification, issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, said: "The President is pleased to appoint R. Venkataramani, senior advocate, as Attorney General for India for a period of three years from the date he enters upon his office." Venkataramani has a rich experience of over 40 years as lawyer and he was also a former member of the Law Commission of India. He was enrolled in July 1977 in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and joined the chambers of late senior advocate in SC P.P. Rao in 1979. He was designated as senior advocate by the Supreme Court in 1997. He has also been associated with National Law School of India University, Bengaluru. The development came days after senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi declined to return as Attorney General. Venkataramani was appointed court receiver by the apex court in Amrapali housing projects matter. On September 23, Venkataramani informed the apex court that over 11,000 flats will be delivered in 2 to 3 months to Amrapali homebuyers', out of which 5,428 flats will be handed over in October. A bench comprising Chief Justice U.U. Lalit and Justice Bela M Trivedi, appreciating the court receiver, said that giving possession of over 11,000 flats out of 38,000 flats is an important development. By Kanu Sarda: Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi (67) is all set to take the baton of the Attorney General of India from K K Venugopal on October 1. The Attorney General is the top law officer of the country and the Centre’s top lawyer before the Supreme Court of India. This will be Rohatgi's second term as the top law officer. He remained in the office of the Attorney General from 2014 to June 2017, after which he resigned and continued with his private practice. Rohatgi recently appeared in the Supreme Court for former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, against whom a probe was ordered after he was accused of granting himself a mining lease as the state’s mining minister. Rohatgi also represented the Special Investigation Team in the Zakia Jafri case, in which the Supreme Court upheld the clean chit given to the Gujarat government in connection with the 2002 riots. NEW DELHI: The Central government on Wednesday appointed senior advocate R Venkataramani as the new Attorney General of India for a period of three years. This comes days after senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi declined Centre's offer to return as the attorney general. Rohatgi said that there was no specific reason behind his decision. Venkataramani is one of the top lawyers in the country and has dealt in matters as varied as constitutional law, environmental law, taxation, tribal rights, and child and women’s rights. New Delhi: Senior advocate R Venkataramani has been named as the new Attorney General of India. He will hold office for a period of three years. The notification regarding Mr Venkataramani's appointment as the Attorney General was issued today by the Department of Legal Affairs, Union Ministry of Law and Justice. Mr Venkataramani will replace current Attorney General KK Venugopal whose term ends on September 30, 2022.Mr Venugopal is currently on his third extension. Earlier, senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi had declined the Centre's offer to return as the Attorney General of India, the government's top lawyer. Mr Rohatgi, 67, had stepped down as Attorney General in June 2017, when Mr Venugopal succeeded him.
