‘Bad Habit’ Co

Whether you’re a New York City native, a transplant, or just a two-day visitor to the sprawling metropolis, you’ve probably seen a struggling artist performing on the subway or a station platform. “Showtime, showtime, showtime!” street dancers often shout before flipping off the ceilings of the train cars and maneuvering around their poles. Going from “Showtime!” to stardom is rare, but Britanny Fousheé did give busking a shot, well before her 2022 breakout as the co-writer to one of the world’s biggest pop songs — “One time I tried to sing on the train,” Fousheé says over Zoom. “And it just did not work out for me.” Her tone is sharp and yet blasé, making it hard to imagine her clamoring for attention in a crowd of commuters. “You see how low I speak,” she continues. Her speaking voice is indeed hushed. Her singing voice is even more distinct, as showcased on “Sunshine,” a standout on the same album that’s home to “Bad Habit,” Lacy’s Gemini Rights. It’s beautifully faint and a little creaky, like Billie Eilish on “Bad Guy” meets Norah Jones on “Don’t Know Why.” “They were like, ‘What?’” she recalls of the subway passengers she subjected to her show. “I’m trying to sing a whisper song over the bustle of the train. Didn’t work out for me.” Fousheé—whose surname is also her stage name — gigged around New York before her recent ascent, hitting the scene at rite-of-passage places like Piano’s and S.O.B.’s in Lower Manhattan. “It’s like training for war,” she says. When we talk...

‎Top Songs of 2022: South Africa on Apple Music

Apple Music’s end-of-year charts are based on plays between 1 November 2021 and 31 October 2022. The streets were calling in 2022, and South Africa’s highest-charting musicians answered with tracks that made even the smallest occasion feel like a turn-up. Amapiano heavyweights including Busta 929, Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa dominated the top of the charts. Those “we outside” vibes saw artists returning to form and toasting their growth, exemplified by K.O and his gritty street anthem, the Blxckie and Young Stunna collab “SETE”. The Afrobeats wave also managed to sweep SA, with Nigeria’s “African Giant” Burna Boy nabbing the No. 3 spot on our charts with his worldwide smash “Last Last”. Further afield, we got stuck in with tracks from global superstars including Adele, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, GAYLE and The Weeknd. Here’s what Apple Music users kept on repeat this year. Hear something that kept you going? Add it to your library—and keep the party going in 2023.

The 20 best songs of 2022

The debut single by London girlband Flo is a time machine. For three minutes, it’s 2000 again: The Writing’s on the Wall is the world’s biggest album, Darkchild reigns supreme over pop, and no pair of trousers is complete without five superfluous pockets and a dangerous array of straps. Flo weren’t even born then but they’re a great study: this effervescent No Scrubs for the TikTok era was one of the freshest pop launches in recent memory, palpably floating on a sigh of relief as Jorja, Stella and Renée kick some bug-a-boo back to Y2K where he belongs. LS 19 Confidence Man – Holiday Holiday sees Confidence Man doing what they do best: toeing the line between cheesy and calculated, cutting anthemic vocals and a bouncy groove with radiant synths and filtered interludes. Connecting the dots between 2022’s indie sleaze and Y2K revivals while also nodding to 2010s EDM, Holiday is warm, nostalgic, and prioritises pure joy over pretension. SB Pure joy … Janet Planet and Sugar Bones of Confidence Man. Photograph: Josh Hourigan 18 Alan Braxe/DJ Falcon – Step By Step ft Panda Bear French touch icons Alan Braxe and DJ Falcon reunited to figure out how their pioneering 90s house might have mellowed into middle age. Step By Step turns down the aggressive filtering of their heyday (an evolution akin to how our hearing range fades with age, maybe) for wistful soft rock that sails, Christopher Cross-style, into a hazy horizon with no division between sea and sky. “As I try to find a new w...
