'Eknath Shinde has not taken this decision suddenly'

After more than two years in power, the Maha Vikas Aghadi government is facing its first serious setback. One of its leading lights, Urban Development Minister and senior Shiv Sena MLA Eknath Shinde appears to have revolted against Sena President and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and walked out of the party with 11 MLAs. Shinde has been a core member of the Shiv Sena and his mutiny comes as a shock to old-timers in the party. Syed Firdaus Ashraf/ Abhay Deshpande to understand what went wrong between Eknath Shinde and Uddhav's Shiv Sena. What caused Eknath Shinde to revolt? In the previous ( Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena) government he was leading the Shiv Sena. But after Uddhav Thackeray became chief minister, he was sidelined in the party. There was unrest in him, which has been triggered now. Moreover, he had the urban development department in his charge which was being monitored by Uddhav Thackeray all the time. Therefore, he felt marginalised, which created a rift and led to this move. Has Aaditya Thackeray's induction as minister and the assigning of important tasks to him have anything to do with Shinde's revolt? Not particularly Aaditya Thackeray. Shinde knew the Shiv Sena is projecting him ( Aaditya Thackeray) as the new party chief so rank and file leaders like him will have to play a secondary role. The trouble was with leaders like Anil Parab etc who he felt he was getting more importance in this government. In the previous government from 2014-2019, when ...

Eknath Shinde news: Eknath Shinde: Former auto driver and Shiv Sena street

Synopsis The four-time MLA, who held the urban development and PWD portfolios in the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Uddhav Thackeray, never hid his humble origins. On the contrary, he made it a point to mention it to underscore how he has been indebted to the Shiv Sena and its founder, late Bal Thackeray for his rise in Maharashtra politics. Born on February 9, 1964, Shinde dropped out of college before completing graduation. After moving to Thane, he soon found his calling as one among thousands of Shiv Sena cadres who were ever-ready to hit the streets at the command of Bal Thackeray. Thackeray formed Shiv Sena in 1966 as a party fighting for the rights of the 'sons-of-the-soil' Marathi-speakers, and later aggressively championed the cause of 'Hindutva'. As Shinde joined the Sena in Thane, he found a mentor in local party stalwart Anand Dighe. He became Dighe's deputy and strengthened the party in Thane-Palghar region after Dighe's sudden death in 2001. The sitting MLA from Kopri-Pachpakhadi in Thane city, Shinde was once a quintessential Shiv Sena street-fighter. He faces dozens of criminal cases for charges such as 'voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons' and rioting, registered during various party agitations. He became a corporator in the Thane Municipal Corporation in 1997 and won his maiden Assembly election in 2004. In 2005 he was made the Sena's Thane district chief. Currently he is in his fourth term as an MLA, while his son Dr Shri...

Eknath Shinde's job restored: Maha Guv did not act as per law, but can’t restore Thackeray govt, says SC

Maharashtra Political Crisis: In a major setback to Uddhav Thackeray and his team, the Supreme Court on Thursday said that current Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde will get to keep his job, even though Maharashtra Governor did not act in accordance with law. The apex court held that the Maharashtra Speaker's decision to appoint Bharatshet Gogawale, who was backed by the Shinde faction, as the Whip of the Shiv Sena party was illegal, Live Law reported on Thursday. The five-judge Constitution Bench, comprising CJI Chandrachud and Justices M R Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli, and P S Narasimha, on Thursday said: 1. The governor had no objective material in calling for a floor test. "If the Speaker and the government circumvent the no-confidence motion, the Governor will be justified in calling for a floor test without the aid and advise of the council of ministers...The assembly was not in session when the Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis wrote to the Government. The opposition parties did not issue any no-confidence motion. The Governor had no objective material to doubt the confidence of the Govt," he said. 2. A floor test cannot be used as a medium to resolve inter-party disputes or intra-party disputes, the bench said. "Even if it is assumed that the MLAs wanted to exit the govt, they constituted only a faction There is a marked difference between the party not supporting the government and the individuals not supporting it. Neither the Constitution nor the law empower...
