Pune: A scooter rider died, while the pillion rider and two others seated in an autorickshaw were injured after a mini-bus rolled down the NIBM Road slope around 7.15pm on Sunday, hitting at least six vehicles before coming to a halt. The incident took place on the slope that connects the Mohammadwadi and Undri areas with the NIBM Chowk, in front of the Orchid Palace society. The mini-bus hit an autorickshaw, a scooter, a three-wheel tempo and three cars. The bus driver, who has been detained by the police, claimed brake failure as the cause of the incident, said the police. “We will get the mini-bus examined by experts from the regional transport office (RTO) to verify his claims,” said inspector Sanjay Mogale of the Kondhwa police. The accident caused a major traffic jam in the area for almost a couple of hours. This is the only alternative road now available for vehicular movement in view of the ongoing work on NIBM Annexe (Cloud 9) Road, which is being done to reduce a dangerous accident-prone slope. Mogale added, “Kondhwa resident Prashant Bhanudas Ghemud (37), who was riding a scooter, succumbed to his injuries at the Sassoon General Hospital where he was shifted after being initially taken to a private hospital near the accident spot. The condition of the pillion rider was reported by the doctors as serious.” The inspector informed, “The mini-bus was going to NIBM Chowk from Mohammadwadi. Vehicles coming from Mohammadwadi drive on an upward gradient to a point from ...

Two die in NIBM rd accident

Two people were killed and six others injured in a major accident on Sunday evening that took place on a stretch of NIBM road between Palace Orchards society and Ishratbaug, Kondhwa, where a bus rammed into a few four-wheelers, two-wheelers, a small tempo and an auto-rickshaw. A couple of injured persons were stated to be critical. The accident took place at around 7.45 pm. The traffic was diverted and the road was closed due to the accident. The local police informed that the road would be opened after the investigation in the accident would be over. Ismail Sayyed, Mohsin Shaikh, Rajesh Jedipal, and two more persons were injured in the incident. The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained. Traffic was temporarily diverted through Undri road from Sanskriti School and from D Mart side on a kaccha road next to Clover Hills Plaza towards Mohammadwadi as the road between Cloud 9 and Sunshree Kangan is closed for traffic due to a road work. There has been an increase in the number of road accidents near Anandvan Park at NIBM annex over the past two years. A total of 20 accidents in 2022 and 25 accidents in 2020 had taken place on that stretch. Residents alleged that several encroachments and narrow roads are the main cause of such accidents. The road is always crowded. It is better to ban this road...

Nibm: Motorists shudder on NIBM Road, residents want slope correction

PUNE: Freak accidents were a regular feature on NIBM-Undri road, and a fatal one was bound to happen on the stretch marked with an uneven surface, crater-like potholes, "dangerous" slopes, illegal parking and encroachments, say commuters and local residents a day after a scooterist's death after being hit by a vanity van. What has added to the commuters' nightmare is movement of additional heavy vehicles, such as water tankers, following the closure of NIBM annexe road, as well as speeding by two and four-wheelers even on the steep slopes and at the blind turns and "lack of policing". "Since the NIBM annexe road was closed for traffic near the Cloud Nine area to fix the slope there, the number of vehicles doubled on NIBM-Undri road. The road was already in a bad condition and the additional load of vehicles made it worse. We have been wondering why the civic body was not repairing the NIBM-Undri road, particularly on the slope between Clover Hills and Palace Orchard housing societies. They have started the repair work a few days ago, but only in patches," said Aftab Sheikh, a local businessman. Local residents said their demand for safe commuting along the road was basic. Alka Kapoor, a senior member of the NIBM Road Residents' Forum, said, "We want the road condition to be fine. As the NIBM Annexe Road is closed, the number of vehices on NIBM-Undri road has increased. We have been demanding the road be made free of potholes, but nothing happens. We are tired of visiting t...

Pune News: NIBM Rd residents again out on streets for basic amenities

PUNE: Beating utensils and shouting slogans demanding the very basic of civic amenities, a large number of NIBM Road residents carried out a protest on Sunday morning. They blocked the stretch of road near the Clover Palisades housing society causing a traffic jam in the area. The slogans - "Sadak Do, Paani Do, Nahi Toh Tax Choro" and "Sadak, Paani, Kachra, Yeh Hamara Dukhra" - revealed their demands for better roads, adequate water and cleanliness in return for their taxes. Protesting residents said the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and other authorities have turned a blind eye to their problems, and that is why they are forced to take to the streets. This latest protest comes just a fortnight after a large group of residents from this area had protested and formed a human chain on NIBM Road. "It has been years since we have been demanding basic facilities. However, no one has paid attention. After our last protest, we expected some action - but nothing happened. There are so many other bigger issues cropping up now, but we are still fighting for basics like water, roads and cleanliness. What do we pay taxes for then?" asked Parveen Tambe, the secretary of the Natraj housing society and one of the founding members of the NIBM Undri Road Residents Forum. Brenden Lopez, a resident of the Winspire cooperative housing society, said the poor condition of the roads and rampant littering are major concerns. "Water availability is also a big problem during the summers. We are ...
