Vachanamrut

There are three scriptures that are unique and central to the Swaminarayan faith. Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s discourses over a 10 year span have been documented in the Vachanamrut, the main scripture of the Swaminarayan faith. Bhagwan Swaminarayan personally dictated the basic code of conduct to be followed by all disciples in the Shikshapatri, a short list of basic precepts. Quotations from the first spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, Gunatitanand Swami, form the third main scripture, Swami ni Vato. Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s daily discourses to devotees and sadhus have been documented in the Vachanamrut, the main scripture of the Swaminarayan faith. The Vachanamrut is a historical collection of 273 spiritual discourses delivered by Bhagwan Swãminãrãyan between 1819 CE and 1829 CE. The word ‘Vachanamrut’ in Sanskrit means ‘divine nectar (amrut) in the form of words (vachan).’ Bhagwan Swãminãrãyan has described the Vachanamrut as being the quintessence of all scriptures. Bhagwan Swãminãrãyan has taken the most profound concepts of Hindu philosophy from the Prasthanatrayi and simplified them so that they can be universally understood. It is filled with sound logic, simple metaphors and analogies, and divine revelations that provide philosophical and practical answers to questions about spiritual living. Different talks in the Vachanamrut address a range of daily and philosophical topics, from removing base instincts of ego and jealousy to recognizing the true guru. The Va...

Swami Nithyananda: Godman’s Own Country

BACK IN 2011, an amusing incident occurred during one of the satsangs organised by the godman Swami Nithyananda. The Swami, having claimed he could make people levitate, was providing a demonstration. He would blow his breath towards a group of people seated on the floor and these individuals, quite inexplicably, began to leap in the air. It wasn’t quite levitation but an unsuspecting visitor might have been fooled into thinking the Swami’s breath had something to do with all the jumping. A person from the crowd is then picked for that demonstration. It isn’t clear in the YouTube video if the Swami was aware the person was a photojournalist. An unexplained device is strapped on his head, but the Swami fails to lift him. The photojournalist is then seen standing on the dais. “What rubbish, I did not jump,” he shouts. “It does not work,” he says. The Swami laughs but he looks upset and says, “He doesn’t want to cooperate.” Nithyananda is known to make bogus claims, from the ability to delay sunrise and make animals speak to make some alleged third eye open up in humans. Many godmen make similar claims in front of unsuspecting and managed crowds. What had worked against him was that he was probably not used to the scrutiny he was coming under. Just months before, he had become something of a viral sensation—played out on TV news channels and social media—where a hidden camera had recorded him with a woman, alleged to have been a former actress. It isn’t quite the ‘sex tape’ i...

It has come to be known now that Swami Nithyananda bought an island off the coast of Equador, near Trinidad and Tobago and declared Hindu Nation ‘Kailasa’. The website of ‘Kailasa’ depicts that it is a nation without borders created by dispossessed by Hindus from around the world who lost the right to practice Hinduism authentically in their own countries”. The website further declared that ‘Kailasa’ was created with the determination to not just preserve and protect Sanatana Hindu Dharma and share it with the entire word, but also to share the story of persecution that is yet unknown to the world. It may be noted that the original childhood name of Nityanand was A. Raja Sekharan. He was born in 1977 at Thirutamilai. He became yogi after staying in various Ashrams. He constructed his ‘Math’ near Erode in Tamil Nadu. He also made devotes in Australia and America. In Tamil Nadu, he established 15 Ashrams. Many industrialists donated lands for his Ashrams. With the increase of fame and money, he created many enemies also. One of them installed a secret camera into his bedroom.
