Nokia 5710 XpressAudio Hands

UPDATED May 14th, 2023 Last month, HMD Global has launched in the I owned a couple of XpressMusic devices back in the day and I can see what HMD Global is trying to do when it comes to its design. For starters, it features the classic red and black colorway and a keypad design that reminds us of the 5310 of 2007. As expected, the body is made of polycarbonate with a matte finish. However, it doesn’t feel as good as other Nokia feature phones like the Nokia 8110 4G banana phone. In some ways, it feels flimsy and hollow. The front part houses the 2.4-inch QVGA TFT colored screen. It’s low-res and has poor viewing angles, which is expected of a feature phone. Above the screen is the earpiece, while situated on its left side are the large volume buttons, while on the right are the music control buttons. The device is chunky with rounded sides so it’s still easy to grip. When held with one hand, you’ll be able to easily press one side of the controls with your thumb. However, the other side is harder to reach. Therefore, you’ll be required to use two hands just to fiddle with the buttons. Placed on the bottom of the device is the microUSB port for charging. At the back, we have the 0.3MP camera, LED flash, and a couple of slits for the speakers. Just above the camera is the slider that reveals/hides the TWS earbuds. Just like old Nokias, the back panel is removable. From here, you’ll be able to access the removable battery, two nano-sized SIM card slots, and a microSD card. To ...

Flashback: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

In our new Flashback series we'll be taking a look back at some of the devices and events that shaped the mobile phone industry and brought us where we are today. The When it came out in late 2008, the 5800 had just about everything you can want from a smartphone. It was a hybrid between the capable N-series and the media-driven XpressMusic, it came with a rich retail package and an attractive price tag. Nokia 5800 XpressMusic This wasn’t Nokia’s first touch-operated device, but it was probably the first that most people saw as it was highly popular and only niche devices came before it. This was also the first time that the then dominating Symbian Series 60 used touch as the primary input and it showed (Symbian UIQ got there first, but it was on its death bed by 2008). To their credit, the Finns released several major updates to the OS that significantly improved the performance of the phone and the usability of the interface. Still, they were trying to drag a 20th century OS into the 21st and it wasn’t going to go easy. The S60 UI finally made the jump to the touchscreen world After Apple caught the mobile world off-guard in 2007 with the first phone and OS that were built from the ground up to use touchscreens exclusively, market-leader Nokia at first dismissed it as a fad and by the time it realized the error of its ways it was very late and it needed to respond quickly. And that’s how we got this phone. But the iPhone had a responsive, finger-friendly capacitive touch...

Nokia 5710 XpressAudio: a new feature phone that has 4G/LTE, FM radio, expandable storage

I became a professional writer and editor shortly after graduation. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; however, they led to some experience in the biotech area, which convinced me of its potential to revolutionize our health, environment and lives in general. This developed into an all-consuming interest in more aspects of tech over time: I can never write enough on the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests include imaging, astronomy, and streaming all the things. Oh, and coffee.
