Nutmeg Bakery to be featured on Food Network's 'Diners, Drive

One of San Diego’s most popular hidden-gem restaurants, Nutmeg Bakery & Café, won’t be a secret much longer. On Friday, the family-owned artisan café with two locations will be featured on Food Network’s popular “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” series. Other local restaurants that have been spotlighted on Guy Fieri’s hugely popular show in years past have said they experienced an immediate jump in business, as well as continued long-term growth thanks to fans of the show who visit from around the country. The exposure couldn’t come at a better time for Nutmeg’s owners, Drew and Michka Hoffos, and Michka’s mother, Shirin Soroushian. The trio opened their first Nutmeg café in 2012 in Sabre Springs and then expanded to Scripps Ranch in 2019. In early 2020, they were looking to open a few more locations around the county when the pandemic hit and their business tumbled 85 percent overnight. (Eduardo Contreras/The San Diego Union-Tribune) To survive, Drew Hoffos said they converted the cafés into markets, where they sold off their flour, yeast and other baking supplies and marketed sandwich meat by the pound. “Pivoting was key to us being able to survive,” Hoffos said. “We got some loans, which are now forgiven, but it was extremely difficult dealing with the uncertainty. For our staff, who work so hard, to go from getting their butts kicked every day because we were so busy to not having work was really tough.
