Monica, O My Darling Review: Rajkummar Rao

The rise and popularity of OTT platforms have given filmmakers a chance to experiment with their stories and take an ‘unconventional’ approach to the narrative. However, too much ‘experiment’ can spoil a project if the writing falls flat and this is the biggest flaw of Vasan Bala’s latest directorial Monica, O My Darling, which is otherwise an honest effort. The Rajkummar Rao, Huma Quereshi and Radhika Apte starrer is a neo-noir crime comedy where the comedy is a hit and miss and the crime-thriller part of it does not invoke any suspense because you can already guess most of the twists and turns. The story follows an ambitious middle-class man Jayant Arkhedkar (Rao) who wants to rise up in status and would consider doing a lot of things for it, including signing a ‘murder agreement.’ He is chosen as one of the board of directors in the robotics company he is working in and is also engaged with the CEO’s daughter, Niki (Akansha Ranjan Kapoor). However, we soon find out that he is also having an affair with the secretary of the office, Monica (Qureshi). But he is not the only one Monica is involved with. There are two more men from the office who are tormented by her and one of them comes up with a plan to remove her from the way. Hence, stars a crime thriller. Now, this is a film that will either grow on you as it proceeds, or you would start getting tired of it as the story moves forward. For me, it was a guessing game of what would happen next and most of the time, I coul...

‘Monica, O My Darling’ movie review: Vasan Bala’s notorious noir is intoxicating Interspersed with juicy pop culture references and infectious musical interludes, the Rajkummar Rao, Huma Qureshi and Radhika Apte-starrer is more than just a well-crafted whodunit November 11, 2022 12:45 pm | Updated 06:16 pm IST A taut pulp thriller that makes more than a few astute observations on the quirkiness of human nature along the way, Vasan Bala’s Monica, O My Darling is a bright addition to the thin list of Indian noir. A juicy adaptation of Japanese author Keigo Higashino’s mystery novel Burutasu No Shinzou, More than just a whodunit, the witty narrative is interspersed with delicious pop-culture references and infectious musical interludes. From Vijay Anand to Sriram Raghavan, Vasan Bala gives a hat tip to masters of Indian noir. In fact, those who have followed Raghavan’s work would almost feel the spirit of Johnny Gaddaar (2007) lingering around throughout the film. In a smart display of self-awareness in writing, Radhika Apte, who plays a sassy cop Naidu, tells a suspect that a perfect back story always creates doubt: “Dheele chhodne ka, feel ke saath.” This is exactly what Bala does. He lets us enjoy the process of coming to the edge of our seats. Even if we know who he is, the whimsical journey to reach there is appetising. He lets the red herrings breathe and generates a feeling for each one of them by referring to real issues in between a fast-paced scenario. Storyline: A ...

My Darling Clementine movie review (1946)

"What kind of town is this?” Wyatt Earp asks on his first night in Tombstone. “A man can't get a shave without gettin' his head blowed off.” He gets up out of the newfangled barber's chair at the Bon Ton Tonsorial Parlor and climbs through the second-story window of a saloon, his face still half lathered, to konk a gun-toting drunk on the head and drag him out by the heels. Earp ( Ford's story reenacts the central morality play of the Western. Wyatt Earp becomes the town's new marshal, there's a showdown between law and anarchy, the law wins and the last shot features the new schoolmarm--who represents the arrival of civilization. Most Westerns put the emphasis on the showdown. “My Darling Clementine” builds up to the legendary gunfight at the OK Corral, but it is more about everyday things--haircuts, romance, friendship, poker and illness. At the center is Henry Fonda's performance as Wyatt Earp. He's usually shown as a man of action, but Fonda makes him the new-style Westerner, who stands up when a woman comes into the room and knows how to carve a chicken and dance a reel. Like a teenager, he sits in a chair on the veranda of his office, tilts back to balance on the back legs and pushes off against a post with one boot and then the other. He's thinking of Clementine, and Fonda shows his happiness with body language. Earp has accepted the marshal's badge because when he and his brothers returned to their herd, they found the cattle rustled and James dead. There is every ...
