Can France repeat at World Cup 2022? Kylian Mbappe shines, Olivier Giroud ties record, but stiffer tests needed

To call Yes, the Aussies scored the game’s first goal, in the 9th minute. Yes, that lead stood up for nearly 20 minutes. No, it did not necessarily increase the degree of difficulty in This was just about as one-sided as it gets in world soccer. The French fired 23 shots to Australia’s four, created seven great scoring chances, and converted more than half of those. MORE: No Benzema? No problem as Olivier Giroud stars In a discussion of the supreme goal scorers in French soccer history, the names Thierry Henry and Michel Platini are going to be mentioned almost immediately, and it’s ludicrous not to bring up Kylian Mbappe even though he’s still just 23 years old. How long would this conversation need to continue before anyone brings up Olivier Giroud? He’s lately been more a great-looking striker than merely great. You could slice a diamond on that jaw line. But France went through the entire 2018 World Cup, won the whole thing, without getting a goal from Giroud. He scored three times at Euro 2016, but one was in the opener against Romania and two more in a five-goal rout of Iceland. When France were being shut out in the final against Portugal, so was Giroud, obviously. So guess who is now France’s leading goal-scorer ever? Well, to say 'Giroud' is only half-right. With two goals against Australia, he tied Henry’s record of 51 international goals for France. 👀 After bagging a brace against Australia, Olivier Giroud joins Thierry Henry as France's joint all-time top goals...

Olivier Giroud breaks Henry's French record with 52nd goal

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — The national team scoring record now checked off his list, Olivier Giroud turned his attention to helping France win a second consecutive World Cup. Giroud broke Thierry Henry’s French record with his 52nd goal for his country on Sunday when he scored the first in a 3-1 victory over Poland that put the reigning champions in the World Cup quarterfinals. “I really wanted to score this goal (against Poland). I was kind of relieved after this goal,” Giroud said. “We can move on and forget about this, because so many people we’re talking about this. Now it is done, that it is a good thing. But most important is to score more goals to help the team to reach our target, which is to go as far as we can.” The 36-year-old Giroud had tied Henry’s record of 51 goals when he scored twice in a 4-1 win over Australia in France’s opening game in Qatar. Against Poland on Sunday, Giroud picked up a pass from Kylian Mbappe in the 44th minute and sent a low shot with his left foot past Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, his former teammate at Arsenal. Mbappe added two of his own goals. It was not too long ago that Giroud had no idea if he'd even have a chance to break the record. He was left off the French squad in May for Nations League games, although France coach Didier Deschamps did not rule out eventually adding the veteran. But when he was chosen, it was supposed to be in a substitute role. Then Karim Benzema — the Real Madrid star and winner of this year's Ballon d...
