What is ONDC? Reportedly incorporated in December 2021, ONDC allows customers to order food, groceries, buy clothes, book cabs, buy movie tickets, electronics and other deliveries. Significantly, it cuts down the middleman between the business and the consumer, unlike Swiggy and Zomato. How to use ONDC? ONDC is not a separate app that can be downloaded from the Play Store. Instead, it works like ONDC’s website answers questions on its availability in pin codes across India. The website reads, “ONDC as a network is enabled across India, Buyer apps may choose to be live on a few of these pin codes. Also, serviceability on a pin code will depend on specific buyer location in that pin code.” Competition for Swiggy, Zomato Over the last couple of days, a lot of people have been posting screenshots on their social media handles, comparing the food delivery prices offered by ONDC, Swiggy and Zomato. And it’s been observed that ONDC costs relatively cheaper. ONDC’s food, beverage, and grocery orders reportedly saw a huge jump in the past few months, albeit from a low base. However, according to a report by ‘Moneycontrol’, the discounting tap was slightly tightened on Sunday by levying packaging fees and a small delivery fee on consumers who had ordered multiple times. It was reported that several users in Bengaluru and Delhi-NCR stated that the discounts available on ONDC had dropped from double-digit percentages to single digits. While a few experts are of the opinion that the cu...

Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is a new government-backed platform, which is providing e-commerce services in food, home decor and more Shutterstock Recently, Twitter was abuzz about how the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is offering dishes from restaurants at a cheaper cost than the big players in the app delivery service, like Zomato and Swiggy. Experts claim ONDC will disrupt the monopoly of existing food-delivery platforms. Others said there is still a long way to go when it comes to user experience. When ONDC launched last year, the minister of state in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Som Parkash, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha explained the concept: My Kolkata tried out ONDC by ordering a meal and here’s the low-down on the experience. What is ONDC and how to place an order on it?

By India Today Information Desk: In India, there is a duopoly on online meal delivery services between Zomato and Swiggy. Although these platforms quickly bring food from restaurants to your door, they are attacked for adding a "middleman cut" that raises the price. This is what the Open Network for Digital Commerce, or ONDC, aims to change by eliminating the middlemen between the customer and the business. Currently, the service is available in a few places, including Bengaluru. It is said that ONDC benefits both; customers and businesses simultaneously, albeit at the expense of sharing your personal information. WHAT IS ONDC? It is an open technology network built on an open protocol that will allow any network-enabled application to identify and engage with local commerce across categories like mobility, shopping, food order and delivery, hotel booking, and travel. The platform makes it possible for buyers and sellers to communicate and transact business online regardless of the other applications customers use. Buyers and sellers are not needed to use the same platform or mobile app in order to execute a transaction. They can use a variety of programmes and still carry on business. According to the commerce ministry, the foundations of ONDC are to be open protocols for all facets of the entire chain of activities in the exchange of goods and services, much like HTTP for information exchange over the internet, SMPTE for the exchange of emails, and UPI for payments.
