Missouri Baptist Children's Home

By: Russell Martin, President Missouri Baptist Children's Home We were saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Raymond R. (Bob) Kenison, who served as president of MBCHfor many years until his retirement in 2014. I was priviliged to have worked with him the entire time he was with MBCH (1977-2014). Under his leadership, MBCH grew from one campus ... People often are confused by the variety of ministries MBCH provides and how we currently take care of children. Many people have the misconception that the number of kids we care for is limited to the number of kids in our residential program on one of our campuses. In reality, the residential program is only a very small percentage of the ministries we provide. In 2019, the following statistics demonstrate the number of clients we served: • Youth served in Therapeutic Group Homes:48 • Clients served through Pregnancy Services: 185 • Clients served through Transitional Living Programs: 50 • Clients served through Developmentally Disabled Services: 14 • Clients served through Human Trafficking Rescue: 22 • Youth served in Treatment Family Care: 147 • Youth served in Family Foster Care: 378 • Foster/Adoptive Homes maintained:199 • Relative/Kinship Homes maintained:104 • Home Studies conducted:824 • Children who were placed in “Forever Families”: 185 • Agency-Based Counselling Clients: 59 • Community-Based Counselling Clients: 39 • Be at least 21 years of age • Complete a child abuse/neglect check and criminal record check • Be i...

Foster Homes

Because Every Child Deserves a Home We believe that children of all ages do best when they are with family. When a child is put into foster care, we work to get him or her home as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we work with almost 400 loving, supportive foster parents who provide temporary care. When reunification with families is not a viable option, we match children of all ages with loving, adoptive families. We support foster parents with extensive training, a monthly support , and staff who are invested in their success and are there to help. Many of our foster parents are adoptive parents, or have remained connected with our children beyond their placement. We stress the importance of co-parenting — foster parent and birth parents communicating and collaborating with the best interests of the child in mind. The Family Finding Department at The Children’s Village identifies the loneliest children in our care and works to identify family connections for them. Learn about the impact the program had on one young woman, Maria, in How You Can Help: Become a Foster Parent Is there room at your table for one more? We are always looking for loving Foster Parents who are willing and able to care for a child on a temporary basis. Often, children come to us vulnerable and scared. They are in need of comfort, love, support and consistency while their families mend. Our initial focus is always family reunification. In some instances a temporary foster care placement can tur...

Orphanages in the U.S.

When people think about orphanages, the majority do not consider them as still in existence in the United States; they tend to believe that they are only needed in third world countries. The usual conceptualization of an orphanage is that of a large building with an overcrowding of children, perhaps similar to the one pictured in the musical of Annie, which featured large dormitory rooms and mistreated children. People usually think of limited sources and unwanted, orphaned children. Orphanages are a topic that is not frequently addressed in our country, and it is not a topic that is easy to discuss. But there are many questions that we should be aware of and know the answers. Did they ever exist? Do they still exist? Were the conditions acceptable? Why were children placed in orphanages? To first understand orphanages and about their creation and duration, we must learn when and why they began. In a recent The concept of When a family was found for the child, the child would travel with an adult who would ensure that the family had what they needed to take care of the child and that the child would fit in with the family. This program did have mostly positive outcomes, and the majority of the children found loving homes and were grateful for their upbringing. However, there was a small number of children that did experience abuse, but fortunately, it was a small percentage. After World War II, the number of orphanages in the U.S. began to decline. That number coincided wi...

Orphanages In Virginia

Are There Orphanages in Virginia? When many of us think of foster care or adoption, the term orphanage may come to mind. Although the concept of an orphanage is one that has been around for decades in Europe and popularized by movies, orphanages actually don’t exist in Virginia or anywhere in the United States. Historically, orphanages were single-family homes where a handful of nurses took care of a large group of children. Run more like a dormitory than a family home, these types of facilities are no longer operational as a means to care for children. While there are no orphanages in Virginia, there is a need for individuals and families to help at-risk children. This is where foster care comes in. History of Orphanages in Virginia Prior to the 1800’s, families who could not take care of a child often gave that child to a relative or neighbor to care for it. For example, if a mother died during childbirth and the father had no ability to care for the child, it wasn’t uncommon for the child to be turned over to a relative. Later, as immigration to the United States grew, the need for more robust care for these children developed. Illnesses in many ethnic immigrant areas often resulted in entire families leaving behind a small child. Poverty during the Great Depression also worsened this situation. Consequently, orphanages opened to meet this demand. These institutions were geared towards children with special needs. Ironically, most orphanages in Virginia and across the c...
