Padmavati row: Who was Rani Padmavati's husband Maharawal Ratan Singh?

WHAT WE ACTUALLY KNOW Ratnasimha, who ruled from 1302-1303, was a ruler of the Medapata (Mewar) kingdom in present-day Rajasthan, India. He hailed from the Rawal branch of the Guhila dynasty, which ruled from the Chitrakuta fort (modern day Chittorgarh). He was the last ruler of this branch of the dynasty, and was defeated by Alauddin Khilji in 1303. Khilji was keen on expanding his power in India, and Chittor was a valuable asset. Ratnasimha's existence was confirmed by the 1302 Dariba temple inscription. According to this, a gift of 16 drammas (coins) were given to the temple, during his reign. Some coins issued by him have also been discovered. LEGEND HAS IT Several legends refer to him as Ratan Singh. However, in Malik Muhammad Jayasi's poem Padmavat, he is called Ratan Sen. While it is usually believed that he had two wives, Nagmati and Padmavati, folklore suggests that he had 15 wives, of which Rani Padmini was the last. According to many tales, Rani Padmini's talking parrot flew to Ratan Singh, and spoke about her beauty to him. Ratan Singh travelled all the way to Simhal Dvipa (Sri Lanka) and won her hand at the Swayamvar. One of King Ratan Singh's subjects was Raghav Chetan, a musician in his court. He used to practice sorcery, which was illegal. However, one day he was caught doing it, and Ratan Singh banished him. Enraged at the humiliation, Chetan hatched a conspiracy. He went to Khilji's court and sang songs in praise of Rani Padmini's beauty. This heightened ...

Much Before ‘Padmaavat’, ‘Padmavati’ Was a 1923 French Opera

The gift of hindsight gives many storytellers opportunities to reimagine the past. Padmavati’s antiquated tale seems to have captured the imagination of many artists who lent the story diverse interpretations. Much before Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, the legend recounted in Malik Muhammad Jayasi‘s poem Padmavat (1540) was a French opera in two acts by composer Albert Roussel, inspired by his visit to the Chittor ruins. The libretto, by Louis Laloy, is based on the scholarly book, Théodore- Marie Pavie's La légende de Padmanî, reine de Tchitor. Composed during the first world war, Padmâvatî was first performed at the Paris Opéra on June 1, 1923. It reportedly acquired the reputation of one of the great neglected masterpieces of 20th-century French opera. Like any other magnum opus, this one styled as an opera ballet, was suffused with dance numbers and kaleidoscopic orchestral colours. Since Rajputana (now Rajasthan) left a deep imprint on Roussel, he weaved many Indian notes in the musical score, replete with a chorus of sopranos offers flowers to Ganesha. Turning the dominant narrative on its head- the opera sees Rani Padmini murdering her own husband, and the king of Mewar, Rawal Ratan Singh, who pleads with his wife to give herself up to the Sultan and then preferring to commit Sati to protect the kingdom’s honour from the loathsome Khilji. The mood leading up to the climax - the elaborate ritual of self-immolation is set as ominous. Bhansali’s operatic version in...

Did Ratan Singh, Padmavati's husband, really die in battle? History says maybe not

Padmaavaat, the controversial Sanjay Leela Bhansali classic shows, in the end, Ratan Singh taking on Alauddin Khilji in a final dual, much like Achilles against Hector. The movie shows how in the dual Ratan Singh actually outlasts Khilji as arrows shot by his principal aide Malik Kafur pierces the Rajput King’s heart and he dies heroically. But history is somewhat different from Bhansali’s tale. (Photograph:Zee News Network) Firstly, there is no mention of the dual having ever taken place between the ruler of Medapata and the Sultan in historical documents. In fact, Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi in his famous poem in 1540 describes Ratan Singh being killed by Devpal, the Kumbhalner ruler. Jayasi in his poem says Devpal proposes to marry Padmini while Ratan Singh is imprisoned by Khilji. After he is freed by his aides, Ratan Singh attacks Devpal and in the ensuing duel, both are killed. Padmini later commits Sati on Ratan Singh’s pyre. (Photograph:Zee News Network) The famous poet Amir Khusrau, however, presents an altogether different version. Khusrau who apparently entered the fort after the defeat of the Mewar army wrote that upon entering Chittor, Khilji ordered the massacre of Hindus inside the fort but spared the royal family. Ratan Singh referred to as Rai lived to see another day, according to Khusrau. Although it does seem improbable that after months of waiting it out outside the fort and capturing Ratan Singh and then coming back to conquer the fort, Khilji act...

I would have played Padmavati as well: Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have never worked together before and are finally coming together for the director’s next magnum opus, Padmavati. Revolving around the historic tale of Rani Padmini aka Padmavati, her husband Rana Rawal Ratan Singh and their nemesis Alauddin Khilji, the film has already gone on floors. Shahid talks to us at length about his role in the film and addresses rumours of a fallout with co-star Ranveer Singh and explains why Padmavati is a risk he loved to take at this stage in his career. Excerpts: What took you so long to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali? While Vishal Bhardwaj’s films are more about reality, Bhansali’s films are about fantasy... But Padmavati isn’t a fantasy. It’s a historical with real characters. Which space do you like more? I like changing spaces which is why I became an actor. I like the fact that I get to do something different everyday. There’s no coherence or consistency to who you are, how you behave and what you need to do. That’s what excites me about this job. I have favourite filmmakers and movies, but not genres. Was Padmavati a yes from the word go? That’s a long story. To cut it short, I always wanted to work with Bhansali sir. He offered me something, I really liked it and I did it. You play Rana Rawal Ratan Singh in the film. Did you know about him or did you research about him after you got the offer? Did I know about the character of the king? The person? Obviously, yes. Padmavati is a rather famous sto...
