Veteran actress Padmini Kolhapure and her actor-son Priyaank Sharma, are currently basking in the success of their debut song ‘Hum Hindustani’ from their recently-launched music label. In an exclusive conversation with ETimes, the actress opened up about the song, collaborating with her son, and also took a trip down memory lane to talk about her journey so far. Veteran actress You’ve done almost everything there is to do in the creative field of cinema, music, theatre, and television. Which role gave you the most amount of creative satisfaction and which one was the most challenging? ‘Insaaf ka Tarazu’ was one of the most challenging films for me because of the whole dynamics — the rape scene and being the victim. It was such a bold role and bold film back then. And also, the beautiful journey of the film ‘Prem Rog’; I loved working with Raj (Kapoor) uncle —- he was an institution in himself. I learned so much from him during 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram' too. Actually, my entire career was a beautiful journey. And what's the one thing that gives you a lot of satisfaction? Honestly, my first love is singing. I wanted to become a playback singer but destiny had another story for me, and I loved every minute of it too. I enjoyed being an actor. Somewhere, theatre has also had an impact on me; my family has been a part of theatre and music since years... and then films as well. They sound so much alike. In fact, Shakti Kapoor often mistakes Padmini Kolhapure’s voice on the phone to be that of wife Shivangi. And does Padmini enjoy pulling that prank! The elder Kolhapure sisters, Shivangi and Padmini, just separated by a year and a half, have been partners in rhyme and crime. As kids they were part of playback chorus, as girls they became privy to each other’s romances and runaway marriages. And though their third sister Tejaswani broke their monopoly in the household after a decade and was viewed as ‘an irritant’ by Padmini then, today, she’s a happy part of the trinity. “Shivangi is hard to understand being a Piscean. But while Tejaswani and Padmini may come across as vociferous, it’s the soft-spoken Shivangi who’s the ring-leader. “Shivangi decides and we merely follow. For her birthday she’s taking us to Kosa Moi. This is the first time we three will be by ourselves,” says Padmini. Shivangi merely smiles in anticipation of the all-girls jaunt.
