Days Gone review

☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ An outlaw biker drifting through a Pacific Northwestern post-apocalypse is a killer premise, and Days Gone occasionally lives up to it. When you're alone on the broken road, riding your scrappy motorcycle between missions, it's easy to get swept up in the apocalyptic romanticism of it all. It's just you, your bike, and an unforgiving land. No job, no bills—just two wheels, a thirsty gas tank, and all the time in the (end of the) world. You play as Deacon St. John, a young Oregon biker who wears a backwards baseball cap at all times—even at his wedding. Two years after a mysterious outbreak has turned half the population of America into zombie-like cannibals called freakers, Deacon embarks on a quest to find his missing wife, Sarah. There are other stories too, including discovering the truth about the pandemic—because there's always a truth behind these things. But it's reuniting with his beloved spouse that really drives our anti-hero. (Image credit: Bend Studio) Days Gone is an open world game, set across a large swathe of the American Pacific Northwest. It's a sweeping, rugged landscape, with old-growth forests, cascading waterfalls, dusty stretches of desert, one-horse towns, and kitschy motels. It's a completely boilerplate zombie apocalypse, decorated with the End of Days Starter Kit: abandoned government checkpoints, mass graves, gutted houses, car tunnels stuffed with wrecks, and so on. But it's all well presented and often extremely atmospheric—especiall...

Days Gone Sequel Would Have Explored a ‘More Technical Direction’

In a recent interview with USA Today's “Yeah, they’re back together, but maybe they’re not happy,” Ross explains in the interview when talking about the pair. “Well, what can we do with that? Okay, we were married before the apocalypse, but what about the future?" With a strong focus on the game's characters, it's no surprise that Ross says a sequel would have also kept in theme with the original's "heavy, strong narrative." Play "We would have kept the bike, obviously. And I think we would have expanded the tone a little bit in a more technical direction, kind of like, ‘Alright, now we have all this NERO tech – what can we do with it?’ The tone would have expanded one ring outward towards some of the new reality. I think this would have been a little bit more – I don’t want to say Avengers, but something where the player had resources, he had some sort of the remnants of whatever the government had." In Days Gone, NERO (or IPCA) tech refers to technology that can be found across the game at its various NERO Research Sites. Days Gone movie is reportedly in the works at Sony

Since Uncharted ‘s successful theatrical run earlier this year, Sony has been preparing to turn more PlayStation franchises into movies. The latest, it seems, is a big-screen adaptation of Days Gone . A report by Deadline states that PlayStation Productions, Sony’s division responsible for greenlighting these games-to-movie adaptations , is bringing on actor Sam Heughan ( Outlanders ) and screenwriter Sheldon Turner ( X-Men: First Class ) for a Days Gone film. Vendetta Productions is seemingly undertaking the movie’s production alongside PlayStation Productions. Days Gone came out in 2019 for the PS4. It tells the story of a biker named Deacon St. John struggling to survive the zombie apocalypse. Well, in the fiction, they’re called “Freakers,” but let’s not do that. Despite some rumblings that it didn’t sell so well, game director Jeff Ross claims otherwise . The actual sales figures are difficult to nail down, but it’s allegedly somewhere around 8 million copies . Some outlets have disputed that number , though. Other PlayStation hits becoming movies include Gran Turismo and Ghost of Tsushima — both of which are already in production. Similarly, HBO is turning The Last of Us into a TV series , while Amazing is seemingly doing something similar with God of War .
