Typhoon Chedeng weakens further, moves faster away from land

MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Chedeng (Guchol) continued to weaken while accelerating away from Philippine landmass before dawn on Sunday, June 11, but the enhanced southwest monsoon or habagat is still expected to affect parts of the country. Chedeng’s maximum sustained winds decreased further from 140 kilometers per hour to 130 km/h, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in its 5 am bulletin on Sunday. The peak was 150 km/h on Saturday, June 10. The typhoon’s gustiness decreased from 170 km/h to 160 km/h. PAGASA sees Chedeng getting downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Sunday or early Monday morning, June 12. As of 4 am on Sunday, the typhoon was already 990 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon, moving north northeast at a slightly faster 20 km/h from the previous 15 km/h. It is projected to speed up northeast and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Sunday evening or early Monday morning. Chedeng is not causing rain in any part of the country and PAGASA advised small vessels to take precautionary measures as waves could be 2 to 3 meters high. Chedeng also continues to enhance the southwest monsoon, which is affecting the following areas on Sunday: Monsoon rain • Zambales, Bataan Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms • Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Calabarzon, rest of Central Luzon, Abra, Benguet, Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Antique Floods and landslides could occur. Mawar to remain a super typhoon when it enters PAR —PAGASA

Super typhoon Mawar maintained its strength on Thursday noon and will remain in the super typhoon category when it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), state weather bureau PAGASA said Thursday. In its 11 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA also said Manwar's "much closer approach" to the Philippines is possible. "The forecast confidence cone and the slightly southward shift in the model solutions suggest that the potential for a much closer approach to the country than the ones shown by the center track is not ruled out," PAGASA said. The super typhoon is expected to enter PAR on Friday evening or Saturday morning. Mawar, which will be called Betty once it enters PAR, is seen to accelerate as it moves west northwestward in the next 12 hours approaching Extreme Northern Luzon. At a press briefing, PAGASA weather specialist Ana Clauren-Jorda said Mawar will remain a super typhoon when it enters PAR. "Makikita natin sa ating track na mapapanatili po nito yung kaniyang intensity o category bilang isang super typhoon hanggang sa pumasok at baybayin nito ang ating karagatan," she said, adding Manwar's maximum sustained winds may reach 215 kilometers per hour (km/h). "Yung 215 kilometers per hour po ay pasok pa rin sa super typhoon category," Jorda said. In its bulletin, PAGASA said Mawar may reach 215 km/h, which is the peak intensity, by Sunday. "Afterwards, the super typhoon is forecast to weaken although it will remain a typhoon by the end of the forecast period," it added....

PAGASA: 'Chedeng' may become typhoon by Friday

MANILA, Philippines (Updated, 11:53 p.m.) — Severe Tropical Storm Chedeng (Guchol) may intensify into a typhoon Thursday evening or Friday, but it is still unlikely to directly bring heavy rain and severe winds, according to PAGASA. Chedeng—the country’s third cyclone of the year—remains far from the land. It was last spotted 1,070 kilometers east of Central Luzon and moving west northwest at 15kph. It has peak winds of 100km per hour near the center and gusts of up to 125 kph. What to expect Weather forecasters said that Chedeng is not expected to directly bring heavy rain in the next three to five days. It may, however, enhance the southwest monsoon (habagat), which may dump monsoon rain, especially in the western portion of the country. The hoisting of wind signals is also unlikely, but the enhanced southwest monsoon may bring gusty conditions in the following areas Friday: • Visayas • Romblon • Occidental Mindoro • Northern part of Palawan including Kalayaan, Calamian and Cuyo Islands • Surigao del Norte • Dinagat Islands • Camiguin By Saturday, gusty winds from the enhanced southwest monsoon will affect these areas: • Calabarzon • Mimaropa • Bicol region • Camiguin • Dinagat Islands Forecast track • June 8, 2023 08:00 PM - 960 km east of Central Luzon • June 9, 2023 08:00 AM - 920 km east of Northern Luzon • June 9, 2023 08:00 PM - 885 km east of Northern Luzon • June 10, 2023 08:00 AM - 895 km east of Northern Luzon • June 10, 2023 08:00 PM - 895 km east of Extreme N...
