45 burnt alive as Volvo bus catches fire near Palem in Andhra Pradesh

Fifty two persons, including 50 passengers, were travelling in the Volvo bus coming from Bangalore to Hyderabad Forty five passengers were charred to death as a private luxury bus burst into flames after its fuel tank caught fire in Mahbubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh early on Wednesday. “Charred bodies of 45 persons have been retrieved from the bus,” Deputy Inspector General (Hyderabad Range) V Naveen Chand said. The accident occurred at 5.10am when the diesel tank of the Hyderabad-bound bus from Bangalore hit against a culvert near Palem in Mahabubnagar, around 140 km from Hyderabad on Bangalore-Hyderabad highway. Police said, the entire bus was engulfed in flames in a matter of minutes. Fifty two persons, including 50 passengers, were travelling in the Volvo bus when the accident occurred. Initial reports had said that some software engineers were among the victims. The bodies have been burnt beyond recognition and it is difficult to ascertain how many of the dead are men or women. Five passengers, the driver Feroze Khan and cleaner Ayyaz, managed to escape with burn injuries and were undergoing treatment at different hospitals, another police officer said. The gory bus accident in the early hours of Wednesday near Palem on the Bangalore-Hyderabad National Highway which left 45 persons dead, shattered scores of families which lost sole bread-winners or beloved members. Venkatesh, a former leader of Praja Rajyam, was on his way to Hyderabad from Bangalore along with his elder sister to distribute wedding invitations of their younger sister. Both of them died in the accident. Priyanka, daughter of Mohan Rao, District Judge at Mahabubnagar , who was travelling to Hyderabad, died. Priyanka, who was a software professional, preferred to be a homemaker. Her father could recognise the body with the help of a chain she wore and accepted the body after inquest and post-mortem. As the identification of the bodies by the relations proved to be difficult, officials decided to shift them to the mortuary at the Osmania General Hospital for DNA test. The close family members were asked to report in Hyderabad for DNA sampling. Ravi, a software professional, was proceeding to Hyderabad to take up his new assignment. Giridhar, General Manager in Ramco Group of companies, who was travelling along with his wife, Vasanthi died. As the bus originated from Bangalore, revenue and police officials from Raichur in Karnataka arrived at the scene to help the victims and their families from the State. Four employees of Jabbar Travels were taken into custody on Thursday in connection with the fire on a Volvo bus in Palem in Mahbubnagar district on October 30 that claimed 45 lives. Shabbir, Akram, Amanullah Shareef and Rafique were picked up by a team of the Crime Investigation Department of Andhra Pradesh, which is looking for two more persons — Jameel and Jabbar. In Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh Transport Minister B. Satyanarayana said that the investigation by the Transport Department and the CID is proceeding on the right lines. “No effort would be spared in bringing those responsible to book,” he declared. Speaking about the probe into the circumstances that led to the accident and other aspects concerning violations of the Motor Vehicles Act, Transport Commissioner G. Anantha Ramu said that while they had registered cases for violations of the MV Act, the whole case pertained to Karnataka, jurisdiction-wise. “The officials have not followed proper procedure while arresting them,” Shakeel Jabbar, owner of Jabbar travels, told The Hindu . “We learnt of the arrest only when we saw the news on television. We contacted our staff who told us that they are in the custody of the Andhra Pradesh CID and have been taken away from Bangalore.
