Pamban Bridge Overview of Pamban Bridge Known to be India’s first sea bridge, the Pamban Bridge is an engineering marvel and one of its kind. Pamban Bridge is the bridge connecting the town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. With 143 piers, spanning 2 kilometres between the mainland and the island, Pamban Bridge is the second longest sea bridge in India after the 2.3 kilometres long Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai’s western coast. Location Pamban Bridge is located in Rameswaram which forms the south eastern tip of India. Rameswaram connects itself to mainland India through this century old sea bridge. Design of the bridge Pamban Bridge is the first cantilever bridge to be built. The double-leaf bascule section of the bridge was constructed a century ago, so that the ferry services are not interrupted. The bridge opens into two facilitating the ships and ferries to cross the Palk Strait that connects Rameswaram and Pamban Island. The splitting of the bridge is a breathtaking sight to marvel. The bridge consists of over 140 spans with midway along the bridge (i.e 114th​ span) being called Scherzer span. The total length of the bridge is 2.057 kilometres. It has 145 spans of 12.20 metres steel girder and Scherzer navigational rolling lift span of 225 metres. New Pamban bridge to be ready by March

By Express News Service MADURAI: The Southern Railway is actively engaged with executing agency RVNL for the construction of the new Pamban bridge by the end of March 2023, Southern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer B Guganesan said in a release on Saturday. The new bridge will have 99 spans of 18.3-metre length and one navigational span of 72.5-metre length. It will be 3 metres higher than the existing bridge with navigational air clearance of 22 metres above sea level. "This will be India's first vertical lift railway sea bridge. The substructure of the bridge is being built for the double line and the navigational span will also have provision for the double line. The entire bridge, including the navigational span, has been designed keeping in mind the railway's electrification plan. In comparison to existing manual operation and control, the new bridge will have electro-mechanical controlled systems which will be interlocked with train control systems," the release added. As much as 84% of the work has been completed. The old Pamban bridge was 108 years old and had got heavily corroded. As part of the construction works, Rameswaram Express trains (Main Line, Cart Line route trains) departing from Chennai, and Chennai Egmore Express trains (Main Line, Cart Line) departing from Rameswaram between January 1 and January 10 have been suspended. Rail operations suspended on Pamban bridge till further announcement

MADURAI: Southern Railway has announced suspension of train operations on the Pamban Rail Bridge till further announcement. All Rameswaram-bound trains will be operated from Mandapam railway station. The zonal railway had earlier suspended all the train operations till Jan 10, 2023. In the early hours of December 23, a continuous health monitoring system installed on the Scherzer span of the Pamban Rail Bridge triggered a red alert. The system was installed by Indian Institute of Technology – Madras to monitor the vibrations on the more than 100 years old bridge. After the red alert was triggered by the system, a team from IIT-M studied the bridge. Senior officials from the zonal railway inspected the bridge. Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) of Indian Railways in Lucknow was consulted. The findings by the expert team from IIT were sent to RDSO. The zonal railway on Tuesday announced suspending train operations on the bridge till further notice. As a result, all Chennai Egmore – Rameswaram – Chennai Egmore express trains operated on the chord line and the main line are cancelled between Rameswaram and Mandapam. Similarly, Rameswaram – Tirupati – Rameswaram tri-weekly express trains, Kanyakumari – Rameswaram – Kanyakumari tri-weekly express trains and weekly trains like Ajmer – Rameswaram – Ajmer Express, Banares – Rameswaram – Banares Express and Okha – Rameswaram – Okha Express are also cancelled between Mandapam and Rameswaram.
