Major Somnath Sharma Major Somnath Sharma was the first person to be honoured with the Param Vir Chakra Award as he was martyred while staving off an enemy attack on the Badgam aerodrome in Kashmir Valley on November 3, 1947. He was personally filling magazines and issuing them to the light machine gunners when an explosion killed him. His martyrdom delayed the enemy for six hours. Naik Jadunath Singh On February 6, 1948, Naik Jadunath Singh commanded a forward post at Tain Dhar near Naushera in Jammu & Kashmir when the enemy attacked. In a brave solitary charge, Singh rushed towards the enemy with his sten gun, despite being alone and wounded, due to which they fled in disorder. However, he lost his life in the fray. Early life [ ] Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was born in a Param Vir Chakra Award [ ] During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, he was serving with the Sekhon, after being hit, was advised to return to the base by ATC Squadron Leader A detailed story of his effort has been mentioned in fairly detailed account by Air Cdre Citation [ ] The CITATION FG OFFR NIRMAL JIT SINGH SEKHON 18 SQUADRON 10877 F(P) Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was a pilot of a Gnat detachment based at Srinagar for the air defence of the valley against Pakistani air attacks. From the very outbreak of the hostilities he and his colleagues fought successive waves of intruding Pakistani aircraft with valour and determination, maintaining the high reputation of the Gnat aircraft. On 14 December 1971, Srinagar airfield was attacked by a wave of enemy Sabre aircraft. Flying Officer Sekhon was on readiness duty at the time. Immediately, however, no fewer than six enemy aircraft were overhead, and they began bombing and strafing the airfield. In spite of the mortal danger of attempting to take off during the attack, Flying Officer Sekhon took off and immediately engaged a pair of the attacking Sabres. In the fight that ensued, he secured hits on one aircraft and damaged another. By this time the other Sabre aircraft came to the aid of their hard-pressed companions and Flying Officer Sekhon's Gnat was again outnumbered, this time by four to one. About Param Vir Chakra: • It is India's highest military decoration awarded for the highest degree of valour or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy. • The Param Vir Chakra was introduced on January 26, 1950, on the first Republic Day with retrospective effect from 15 August 1947. • Literally, Param Vir Chakra means ' Wheel (or Cross) of the Ultimate Brave'. • It can be awarded posthumously. • It is similar to the British Victoria Cross, US Medal of Honor, or French Legion of Honor or Russian Cross of St. George. • Design: • The medal was designed by Mrs. Savitri Khanolkar. • The medal is c ast in bronze and circular in shape. • In the centre, on a raised circle, is the s tate emblem, surrounded by four replicas of Indra's Vajra, flanked by the sword of Shivaji. • On its reverse, it shall have e mbossed Param Vir Chakra both in Hindi and English with two lotus flowers between Hindi and English. The fitting will be swivel mounting. • The decoration is suspended from a straight swiveling suspension bar, and is held by a 32 mm purple ribbon. • First winner: Major Somanth Sharma, from the Kumaon regiment. • Till now, only 21 people had been given the Param Vir Chakra award of which 14 are posthumous.
