Who did Pele play for? List of clubs and why he never played in Europe

While so many players' greatness fades with time, generation after generation still knows Pele as one of the greatest footballers ever. The Brazilian legend passed away on December 29 at the age of 82 after a battle with colon cancer. Pele's eternal greatness is anchored in his three World Cup triumphs and the incredible impact he had on each tournament, as well as his 757 official (1,283 claimed) career goals. We take a look at the club career of FIFA's Player of the 20th Century which is perhaps given less of the spotlight when it comes to talking about his impact. PELE: Which clubs did Pele play for? Unlike the men Pele is compared to in heated GOAT debates, the Brazilian icon never played in Europe. In fact, he only spent two seasons outside of his native land. Pele signed for Brazilian side Santos at just 15-years-old in 1956, and didn't leave until 1975. The forward is Santos' all-time record appearance maker (636) and, naturally, top goalscorer (618). Pele retired from competitive action after the 1974 season before making a shock comeback to sign for New York Cosmos, playing in the emerging North American Soccer League. Pele's arrival brought an immense buzz to the MLS' predecessor, with only David Beckham's LA Galaxy transfer comparing in the modern age. Before retiring, Pele scored 37 goals in 64 games for the Cosmos. Pele's years in the US couldn't convince Americans to love soccer, though, and both the Cosmos and the NASL folded in 1985. Pele, the ‘black pearl’ who charmed the world, no more

Pele, the magical Brazilian football star who rose from barefoot poverty to become one of the greatest and best-known athletes in modern history, died at 82 in Sao Paulo on Thursday. He had been in and out of hospital in recent months after a tumor was found on his colon. Pele, whose given name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, scored a world record 1,281 goals, and is the only player ever to win the World Cup three times. With sublime skills and a winning smile, he helped make football the world’s most popular sport and he charmed popes, presidents and Hollywood stars in a seven-decade career as player and ambassador for the sport. Several aspects of his youth are obscured by myth, including the origin of his famous nickname. As Pele (sometimes) told it, he often played as goalkeeper in neighborhood games, and kids began comparing him to a local player named "Bile" - and the letters got twisted over the years. Whatever the truth, he was soon dazzling scouts not as a goalkeeper but as an attacking forward - a prototype number 10. He was respected for his range of talents, and more so than any player since, he could do it all: He was two-footed, had tremendous pace and stamina, he could head, pass, tackle - and of course, he could score goals. He joined Santos at the age of 15 and turned the small coastal club into one of the most famous names in football. 01:43 Pele, the legend who wowed the world, dies Over a glittering 18-year spell at the club he won every honor in Brazi...
