PERIYAR NATIONAL PARK: All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (with Photos)

Periyar National Park is located in Thekkady. Can be reached by road from Kottayam/Munnar (3 hr drive respectively). We drove from Munnar and the road is very scenic, despite being a single carriageway. It's preferable to have own vehicle and stay outside the park (lot of options available) as there's no entry/exit possible after 5:30 pm. There are a plethora of activities to do in the park, the 1.5 hr boat ride being the most popular. Rides start from 7:30 in morning and last one is at 3:30 pm. Sighting of 🐘, bisons, wild boar are very common during the ride.. but one has to be supremely lucky to sight a 🐅 (not sighted in last 2 years as per locals). But still the boat ride is absolutely scenic. Adventurous types can go for treks, which are of many types, ranging from 1-2hours to couple of days. We did the 3 hour trek, wherein one goes inside the dense jungle, sees a wide variety of trees , plants, flowers butterflies and birds.. lucky ones can sight 🐘 or bisons too. The whole experience is awesome and highly recommended. Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (PNP) is a protected area located in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta in Kerala, India.
