According to Hindu Panchang, it begins from Purnima (full moon) tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Bhadrapad month and gets concluded on the Amavasya tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Aswin month. The last day of Pitru Paksha is also known as Sarvapitri Amavasyaor Mahalaya Amavasya and is considered the most significant day of Pitru Paksha. According to Hinduism, it is important that once the person dies, his near and dear ones make sure that the soul leaves the mortal in a dignified manner. Though a funeral puts the body to rest, it is important for the soul to attain liberation. Hence, during this period, the family members of the deceased conduct Shradh every year so that the soul can attain moksha. Pind Daan is also performed during Pitru Paksha. As per the Hindu Puranas, it is said that Hindus owe a karmic debt to their ancestors and try to pay it back by performing Pind Daan during Shradh.
