THE 15 BEST Things to Do in West Des Moines

Give yourself time to find parking! We drove and drove around some more...it was super packed....but got some great gifts...Oakley store was a hit and we purchased and the guy could not have been any nicer. Hollister was a good stop also purchasing a lot. Be sure and go to The Cheese Cake Factory at an off time as the wait in an hour at lunch time. We loved this shopping mall for the teens and college age and for me an elder. Had an opportunity to visit the Jordan House and do a tour with family over the Thanksgiving weekend. Was able to a learn alot about early pioneer and settlers of Valley Junction or Wes Des Moines. Interesting to learn how they lived, decorated their homes, involved in cattle farming and crop farming, and members of the underground railroad moment of slaves in Iowa. Nice to see how the generations of Jordan still support the landmark house. Also loved seeing the home decorated for Christmas. old school "dive" feel, quaint, intimate type setting. If you wanna sit in comfy chairs or be in state of art arena, this isnt your place. but if you want the music to rattle the wood floor under your feet and to feel like you are able to reach out and touch the performers on stage, THIS is your place! I think the only thing that has been updated since the 40's is the bathrooms. It's very nice church which reminds me the original church of St Francis in Assisi, Italy. Inside it's a different story. It's modern church with the altar almost in the middle. The interi...

THE 15 BEST Things to Do in Des Moines

I had a great visit to the Capitol Building. It's free to enter and you can take a self-guided tour or join one. The building is beautiful - inside & out. The highlight is The Library - it's a stunning room with spiral staircases, polished wood, beautiful light fixtures, and stained glass. I met a rep from the Iowa House while walking around, he gave me a brief background on local politics and some dinner recommendations - Iowa Nice is 100% a real thing! Also take time to walk around the building to see the statues and monuments. We could have walked from our hotel, nope, took shuttle. Happy we did, requested driver to drop us off at further end so we could walk back to hotel at end of visit. Driver took us for a joy ride around town, a must see. Opposite side of this FM on Friday night they had a Symphony. Near the five gold domed State Capitol. It was getting crowded at 4pm with all the lawn chairs. Iowa is lovely, I'm in love! Several pubs and dining to find. Lots of people, all FM are crowded. This one is pretty tight with people, elbow to elbow. Very hard to pass anyone, impossible. Unless you walk out on sidewalk, out of main drag. Live music, lots of food, lots of fresh veggies which are reasonably priced. We bought greenbeans. It took us an hour to walk, located on three streets combined of seven blocks approximately. When we saw food sections we turned around and kept walking. Remember to wear good supporting sneakers not sandals, lots of walking. Bring your canva...
