Kodikkarai Wildlife Sanctuary (Point Calimere) (Nagapattinam)

Now they are not allowing own cars inside and they are forcing to use the age old 26 seater van. This van will be charged ₹1000 or we can join with other groups and share the van cost. But still the other fees are applicable. You can see only Deers and horses. Sometimes Warthogs. These people become money minded and keen on doing business. There should be option for seven seater as per the rate card. But I couldn’t find any 7 seater to take us inside. We waited for other groups to share the van cost. But it’s not a crowded place. Better skip this and find some other worth sanctuary. Its worth a visit to the point calimere sanctuary. You can spot black bucks, and a number of birds . Better to visit in the morning. There is a small poster area at the entry. Worth spending a few minutes. Go all the way to the shore and enjoy the palk strait. The roads are drivable but rough at places. Make sure you have vehicle with good tires and spare for sure just in case… There are no decent places to stay nearby. Best to stay at Velankini and road (53 kms) is amazing drive a recent visit 2 days back to kodikkarai was with mixed feelings of expectation and disappointment.the place has lot of potential for nature lovers .a vast and broad seashore which can be better developed .place is not visited by discerning visitors.presumably the GAJA has done its bit to derail infrastructure and things are going back to normalcy slowly.the whole thing needs more marketing with improved travel facilit...

The wildlife sanctuary and the bird sanctuary, the medicinal plants, Ramar padam and the beach are places to visit if you are looking for a relaxing holiday, with literally nothing to do. A small interpretation centre and documentary about the place are informative. The guides are very helpful. But, it is a very difficult place for pure vegetarian. Guests need to get food from a mess at the Kodikkarai village and only sea food is available. Vegetarians need to arrange for food from Vedaranyam. The best time to visit is between November and January. Do have binaculars and be prepared to walk down at the bird sanctuary. We visited Point Calimere during the last week of December 2014 expecting to watch migratory water/shore birds in large numbers. Due to a depression in Bay of Bengal it was raining but the shower reduced in the second and third day. Visited the Vedaranyam sanctuary which consists of various wild/ bird sanctuaries. Could see large flocks of Greater flamingos which was the star attraction. Big flocks of bar tailed Godwits, Little stints, Ring plovers, various duck species etc etc. At the wild life sanctuary we could spot black bucks, spotted deers, jackal, ferral ponies , wild hare etc. Bring plenty of drinking water, camera with telephoto lens, short pants and footwear for wading. Only two decent places of stay near the shore. Only two wayside eateries with a small menu. At Vedaranyam plenty of options for stay and food available. Beware of mosquito bites in t...
